Return up McCarrs Creek Rd.  Right into West Head Rd.  Left down to Akuna Bay for 2nd Nosh Stop at Akuna Bay.  Climb anti-clockwise from Akuna Bay passing Illawong Bay to re-enter Mona Vale Rd bound for Terrey Hills, thence Ayres Rd/Mona Vale Rd, Nth St Ives.

1st Leg:  Ayres Rd/Mona Vale Rd, Nth St Ives, Terry Hills Fruit Barn, Duffys Forest to the former Terrey Hills Thai Restaurant Sag Stop - 20.5km - 65 min

*        N/E along Mona Vale Rd for 4.9km,

*        L at Terry Hills Fruit Barn 7:30am into Myoora Rd and take a 1st Sag Stop (3 min) from 7:30am,

*        Ahead 3km along Myoora Larool Rd,

*        L into Tepko Rd (75m short of Booralie Rd) for 400m,

*        L into Booralie Rd, 'n pedal 6km on a flat/fast stretch past Terrey Hills Golf Course and rifle range to Duffy's Forest (amidst real pigs, goats, horses 'n cows),

*        L into a 'No Thru Rd' about 300m before end of Booralie Rd and cycle a C/W loop back onto Booralie Rd and retrace eventually passing Terrey Hills neighbourhood shopping centre, thru roundabout and take 2nd Sag Stop (5 min) from 8:20am outside former Terrey Hills Thai Restaurant at top of McCarrs Creek Rd - muster on RHS of white road line under tree cover.

2nd Leg: Former Terrey Hills Thai Restaurant to Flying Fox Café  - 12km (agg 35.5km) - 35 min

 

 

8:25am -

*        3.3km down McCarrs Creek Rd to McCarrs Creek bridge,

*        veer L on McCarrs Creek Rd for 9km passing Church Point and also Bayview Marina Kiosk arriving Flying Fox Café from 9:10am for 1st Nosh Stop (30 min). 

4th Leg: Flying Fox Café  to Akuna Bay  - 14.4km (agg 56.3km) - 60 min

At 9:40am, cycle 7.4km up McCarrs Creek, turn R to Akuna Bay anti-clock, a further 4.5km for Brunch 2nd Nosh Stop (30 min) at Akuna Bay from 10:40am.

5th Leg: Akuna Bay, Illawong Bay to Ayres Rd/Mona Vale Rd, Nth St Ives - 16.4km (agg 71km) - 65 min

11:10am climb anti-clockwise from Akuna Bay passing Illawong Bay to Terrey Hills and re-enter Mona Vale Rd via the tunnel under Mona Vale Rd.  Or wait at lights and R into Mona Vale Rd for 6.6km to Ayres Rd/Mona Vale Rd, Nth St Ives from 12.25pm.  

Risk Warning
 Ø    Hardcopy these directions and bring on Sunday

Ø    Expend 5 min studying your street directory

Ø    Don't ride two abreast on single lane roads with an unbroken centre line and descend corners on wet roads as though you are skating on ice

Ø    When passing a fellow Mugg, always provide a metre clearance.  If you can't, or are passing on the inside, you MUST call out loudly eg. "passing inside" etc

Some forms of cycling are dangerous.  An ave of 36 Australian cyclists have been killed annually since 2000.  95% of these fatalities occur on the road. 

Other cyclists in Australia break bones and incur nerve impairment from falling off their bikes in accidents. 

A cyclist could fall from his/her bike, inter alia, due to -
(i)      being hit by a car or another cyclist; or
(ii)     encountering a pothole;

(iii)    cycling too fast on a wet downhill where the coefficient of friction is much less, particularly at corners; or
(iv)    getting their bicycle wheel caught in a gap in a timber bridge.

A negligent cyclist could -

(a)    be litigated by a seriously injured cyclist, or 3rd party (ie. a woman pushing a pram on a footpath or a car driver) under common law where the damages could exceed $500,000; and

(b)    lose his/her home if he/she did not have public liability insurance which covers their negligence whilst on a push bike.

A negligent cyclist who did not have personal injury insurance (ie self-employed without income protection cover) could struggle to meet regular outgo commitments.

A seriously injured cyclist could be awarded damages which a negligent cyclist could not afford to pay if the negligent cyclist -
(I)     did not have public liability insurance cover; and/or
(II)    did not possess valuable assets.

Ø     Cycling without Public Liability cover is as silly as driving without 3rd Party -
 join Bicycle NSW for PL insurance, so that all Muggs are better protected

Ø     Click on: Risk Management which warns of 'inter alia', the dangers of cycling on public roads with motor cars, potholes and over bridges with vertical timber planks with gaps

Annual Boxing Day 2021 'catch-up' ride for Recalcitrant, Erstwhile Muggs at Coffee Kiosk at The Estuary Waterfront Seafood Restaurant - Kangaroo Point - 9 Muggs plus a few stragglers

Eric aka PapaBear recommended The Coffee Kiosk at The Estuary, after our regular haunts were not opening on Boxing Day.  Bereft of motor bikes and juxtaposed against the Hawkesbury River, it is a venue that Muggs will visit often.

Brief report on 2022 New Year's Day annual ride from Sutherland to Nth Wollongong, thence train home
 Lois aka LoisLane, Phil aka BankTeller, Eric aka PapaBear and David aka  Once an IronMan experienced a coolish morn to safely cycle to Nth Wollongong.  Eric opted to cycle back to Sutherland from our Nosh Stop at Ruby's Cafe Bulli.  Ann aka ToothFairy squibbed it preferring to hike in Tasmania.

Syd aka MotorMechanic is now the 5th Mugg rider to purchase the same flight ticket to Milan, Italy for Tour Italia this August which includes 30kgs luggage

MotorMechanic has booked a two person bungalow at same camp ground in Colfosco.  Tour Italia informs that Bank Teller has sourced a second apartment in Bormio for 500 Euro for our 7 days in Bormio which can accommodate up to 4 adults.  Scott aka Patternmaker will concur that it won't be available for long as it took a LOT of searching to find our first apartment 'cause we are there in peak Summer season.  So if you would like to share these two apartments, thereby securing a cheap deal, and climb for up to 18 climb days with Muggs 'burgeoning contingent', contact Syd or Bank Teller pronto.

 Bank Teller rec'd an email on Wed 5 Feb from Amy G_ymer, Tenant/Cafe Mgr, informing that she was closing her occupancy this Saturday, because the Owner/Landlord refused to expend monies to achieve Compliance determined by Local Council.  This is a real shame because Amy was an exceedingly zealous/fervent Tenant/Cafe Mgr.  

Nth Turra' (or Hornsby) to Red Herring Cafe, Brooklyn Pier and return - 76km (or 62km from Hornsby) - 6 riders

After our Nosh Stop at Red Herring Cafe, Brooklyn Pier, three crew then cycled to Mt White 'n back.  It was an exceedingly humid, energy sapping morn'. The motor cyclists at PitS on our return leg were multiple and disturbing.  ToothFairy counted six different photographers on the 3.85km ascent from Brooklyn Rd encouraging motor cyclists to bend even further into the corner for a more impressive pic.  No more Muggs' Sunday rides along the ascent from Brooklyn Rd until the speed limit is reduced from 80 km p/h to 60 km p/h.  Take a squiz of what PitS was once like - cyclist friendly, but alas no longer.

The troika back at Galston shops now focused appearing 'in high spirits, lucid and cognisant', even though it had been a tough ride due to many short sharp ascents.
But our Roller Coaster ride couldn't have been overtly tough, as an old fellow just shy of 80 years, PapaBear, cycled well over 100km having started from his St Ives digs and returning back to 'em.

Hornsby to Brooklyn 'n back - 53km - 5 cyclists

On a surprisingly sunny, pleasant morn' five old Muggs were in no hurry to leave Brooklyn Pier.
On the climb back up to PitS, Arno aka Heineken met BankTeller.  David aka TreeHugger, Campy and BankTeller thence chewed the fat with Heineken and Tony aka Samurai 'et al' at PitS.

Phil said to Arno, "Tony told me that he hardy cycles with your group, 'cause your group is too fast".  Arno retorted, "Well if he didn't want to talk so much, he would find it easier to keep up". 

Arno also said that he had visited Canberra and cycled with Todd Sowter aka I.T. Nerd who was even faster, as he cycles with an Aust Institute of Sport ride group.

Annual Boxing Day 'catch-up' ride - Hornsby, Sommerville Rd, Galston Gorge, Berowra Waters, Brooklyn Rd climb ride - 74km - 12 riders

The Whippet, 83 years 'young', raced BankTeller up the climb from Galston Gorge, passing each other twice.  But 110 metres from the apex, Whippet, threw in a surge to claim the KOM.

There was some unwanted conjecture at the Sag Stop at Cnr of Crosslands Rd and Galston Rd. from the sole who thinks he is Elvis reincarnated, ably supported by a former Printer, when BankTeller announced that Four Old Farts were going to take the flatter route to Berowra Waters, and not the lumpy backroads route scheduled in The Bullsheet.  Ever 'risk averse' BankTeller was concerned that The Whippet might suffer a cardiac arrest and Publican then litigate BankTeller for negligence, upset 'cause Tony had lost his midweek riding partner.

But notwithstanding taking the easier traditional main roads route, it wasn't all smooth sailing through Galston, Arcadia and Berrilee.

BankTeller headed Brian early on the descent to Berowra Waters. But after descending past the verdant meadows with the horses, Brian passed Phil and exclaimed "Race you to the bottom."

BankTeller retorted a voluminous NO. Fortunately, Whippet eased off the accelerator.  Do all of us get wiser, as we get older?

Xmas Eve, Monday 24 Dec '18 - 12th Annual "Tour de Old Bathurst Rd, Blaxland, Springwood, Yarramundi, Richmond"  - 86km  -  6 riders which included Pete aka Yamaha and his two daughters, Sarah aged 12 and Samantha aged 10

Apologies for Scribe's below four pics, 'cause he had Flash set to On, when he should have had Flash set to Auto.  Whereupon the flash would not have made the bright sun light even brighter.
