Last Sunday's rap-up of Tour de
Windsor returning via Sackville Ferry - 125km - 7 cyclists In last week's ride David aka TreeHugger reckoned that the recent La Nina is the reason why this Winter, in particular this August, is so very cold. Seven sturdy souls - Arno aka The Kaiser, Phil aka Scribe, Pete aka CampyAficionado, debutant Wendy aka KiwiNurse and John aka BakerBoy commenced from Hornsby. PacificPete and Harry aka KayakMan started from Round Corner Dural. We all descended Galston Gorge on the coldest morning in the history of the world!!! Scribe's bottom crank proved "dickey" whereupon he hitched a ride back to Hornsby from the top of the Gorge. Around 9:20am the six survivors marshaled at the Bridge Cafe in Macquarie Square, Windsor. Over Lattes and cakes on such a cold day consensus prevailed to abandon the scheduled "Freemans Reach 37km loop" and return via the Sackville Ferry - albeit a 75km stretch home broken by a Nosh Stop at Andy's Cafe, Nth Galston. Whilst enjoying coffee and a raisin toast in Windsor, BakerBoy cast his eye about Macquarie Square and remarked on the number of men with big beards. CampyAficionado preferred that we were in 'Clampet Country' - Jed, Jethro, Eli-May and Granma all are still alive and kicking in Windsor. Harry was the usual power house. As the lean team crossed on the Sackville ferry, CampyAficionado asked Harry had he ever done any water skiing. Whereupon KayakMan retorted, "Oh a bit, about 30 yrs, I gave it up probably 6 or 7 years ago". Enough said. Wendy, who has not ridden recently was all tuckered-out by the time we reached Halcrows Road and willingly accepted a lift with PacificPete from Porters Lookout back to Hornsby. Wendy showed her pluckiness to attempt a 125km ride on such a frightfully cold day. Lets hope we didn't scare her off, 'cause within a month the weather will be a lot warmer and most of our rides don't have such a long 2nd leg, albeit we usually pull in at Andy's Cafe when returning via Sackville and Maroota. Yesterday's ride had scheduled the option to return via Cattai Ridge which would have been 26km shorter. Congrats to all who rode such a tough route yesterday. Scribe 25 Aug 2008 |
