Impact of Two "Free Market" Traditional Economic Influences on Western World's penchant for Economic Materialism Laissez-faire is French for "let it be" ie. "free-market" - a doctrine that maintains that private initiative and production are best allowed to roam free, opposing economic interventionism by government beyond that which is perceived to be necessary to maintain individual liberty. The Bill of Rights comprises the first ten amendments to the American Constitution adopted almost 200 years ago, which ensure the rights of U.S. citizens and limiting the power of government. The Fourteenth Amendment of 1868 stated, in part, that:
The standard of living in the USA, particularly after WW2, advanced at an unprecedented rate partially due to American's preoccupation with the individual's right to do what the individual wants which has facilitated enterprise and innovation.
However, a cost of this increase in Economic Materialism is that though accounting for only 5 percent of the world's population, Americans consume 26 percent of the world's energy (American Almanac) and it creates a commensurate level of GHGs. In view of global economic prosperity and the Western penchant for excessive credit, the blueprint of energy consumption which the world's most powerful nation has promulgated is likely to multiply in the short term due to Eastern Europe, Asia and Oceania similarly seeking greater Economic Materialism. The two major parties in the U.S. are the Republican Party and the Democratic Party. The familiar mantra promulgated by Republican Shock Jocks which is supported by most of America, with the likely exception of San Francisco, is "we stand for LESS GOVERNMENT" whereas Democrats want "MORE GOVERNMENT". One view of government is to "protect the individual rights of its citizens". But in doing so, has government allowed the collective benefit to the community and the GDP of the community to be diminished because too many citizens have succumbed to the lure of the 5th Guidance Influence resulting in 'inter alia' Negligent Lifestyle Behaviour at a material cost to the taxpayer? In Australia's case, the Negligent Lifestyle Annual Costs exceeds $155b and increasing. Section 6 explains the 5th Guidance Influence is a primary Cause of the Adverse Effects, namely Fifteen Problems, which include the Taskforce's Three Public Health Risks. Section 7 asserts that Government should invoke its rights under the Traditional Role of Democratic Government to provide a 6th Guidance Influence which does not seek to hinder either of the Two "Free Market" Traditional Economic Influences, but seeks to offset Adverse Effects of the 5th Guidance Influence by assisting Interested Adults to Materially Alter Lifestyle by commencing a REA that is is Fun And Addictive. The Traditional Role of Democratic Government is to provide inter alia social utilities which are not naturally forthcoming through supply and demand in the private sector that government believes are in the collective best interests of the people. Historic examples of this have been education, social welfare, defence, the legal and penal/prisons system. As economies have developed, some of the functions have been privatised. Government is elected by the people, from the people, for the people. The integral part of this cliché is "for the people", and particularly those who are more vulnerable to Predatory Marketing. Alas, due to an 'inequitable distribution of intellectual wealth', some "for the people" are less intelligent and less capable of making economic and Lifestyle Behaviour decisions in their best interests. Conversely, some people who are more intellectually gifted are more adept at conjuring financial arrangements to their best interests, and often to the detriment of less intellectual "for the people". Government, per se, have too often failed to take this 'inequitable distribution of intellectual wealth' into account, because government has not always acted at arms length. A classic example of this has been Australian state governments penchant to grant extended hours liquor licences and encourage gambling and motor sports when these are patently not in the best interests of "for the (collective) people". These concessions have been granted because of the revenue streams those activities reap to the approving government and to the associated service providers. Alas, the government which is responsible for funding single parent pensions resulting from breakdown of the family unit, police and the penal system incur increased costs due to the damage from alcohol abuse and gambling addiction. Climate Change is a loser from motor sports. Patently the above Two "Free Market" Traditional Economic Influences, namely "let free market forces prevail" and "citizens rights" have contributed to an increased standard of living across the Western World which is largely due to Economic Materialism. But at a GHG cost which is forecast to skyrocket as other nations seek to emulate the U.S.'s towering materialistic lifestyle (5% of global population and between 25%/27% of global GHGs) which can extend to Conspicuous Consumption, not to mention the cost of the Other Fourteen Problems. Problems and stresses due to a penchant to acquire possessions and consume are not new. Buddhism cites the 10,000 joys and 10,000 sorrows of life. Buddhism's "Second Noble Truth" is inter alia that suffering is caused by "craving what we want" and rather than constantly struggling to get what you want, modify your wanting because it deprives you of contentment and happiness. Siddhartha Gotama's (known as the Buddha) contentment ethos five hundred years before Christ is becoming popular in western countries. Buddhism has answers to problems in modern materialistic societies because of its extensive understanding of natural therapies to arrest anxiety and depression which some psychologists consider effective therapy. |
