Economic Materialism means a person or group choosing to spend their resources, particularly money and time, to acquire lavish material goods which signify wealth, luxury and status.  Material goods may include, but are not limited to, a large home with many bathrooms, holiday home, SUVs, motor homes, boats, plasma TV, home entertainment system, lavish holidays abroad etc.

Arguably enhanced standard of living in the Western World has been a favourable effect of Economic Materialism.  However, not all effects from pursuing Economic Materialism have been favourable to the community.

Invariably a close correlation exists between Economic Materialism and high GHG Emissions as measured by Carbon Footprint.

Extreme examples of Economic Materialism are known as Conspicuous Consumers.

Critics Of Economic Materialism espoused their concerns over pursuing Economic Materialism.  Their criticisms preceded the GFC.
