Fourth Business Plan - Project "Aussie Green Team" Accreditation

To mobilise around 10% of Australians, approx 2,100,000 (from those aged 15 years or older) to -

(a)        want to submit their Personal Eco-Profile as a Sporting Participant in one Australian Sporting Team (that they are a team member) on a Register of "Aussie Green Sporting Teams" ; and

(b)        overtly mandate Australian governments to make sometimes unpopular decisions to reduce the Average Australian's Current Carbon Footprint

Tap into a unique trait which Australians are renowned for the world over to galvanise the majority of the 4 million circa Australian Sporting Participants (2,100,000 circa) who play in +75,000 Sporting Teams, both 'organised' and non-organised', to want to -
(i)         live a Local Community Healthy Lifestyle;

(ii)        understand their Personal Carbon Footprint and their Primary Energy Carbon Contributors;

(iii)       'Declare' their Personal Carbon Footprint on a Register of "Aussie Green Sporting Teams" ;

(iv)       'Pledge' on a Register of "Aussie Green Sporting Teams"  to live by Ten Green Commandments to pursue Australia's Personal Target Carbon Footprint to thereby be awarded an "Aussie Green Team" Accreditation; and

(v)        provide a demonstrable mandate to all 3 tiers of Australian government to "make the tough calls" to reduce the Average Australian's Current Carbon Footprint which per capita is high amongst First World Countries

The Federal Department of Climate Change ("DCC") or individual State Departments of Environment and Climate Change could award a Gold, Silver or Bronze "Aussie Green Team" Accreditation to up to 75,000 circa Australian Sporting Teams which comprise at least a 10 Sporting Participants (from aged 15 years or older) following at least 10 Sporting Participants successfully -

(A)        applying for an "Aussie Green Team" Accreditation by submitting their Personal Eco-Profile as a Sporting Participant in one Australian Sporting Team on a Register of "Aussie Green Sporting Teams" ; and

(B)        complying with (i) to (v) above.

In peace time, Sport can better engender a 'Common Cause'  to "think of others" than anything else.

80% circa of Australian sport is played in the outdoors.  Sporting Participants in Australian Sporting Teams, except Petrolheads generally –

(a)             have a smaller Personal Carbon Footprint than non active Australians who often self-gratify and self-ingratiate by garnering new, bigger faster toys (ie. Plasma TVs, home entertainment systems, SUVs, bigger A/C, newer kitchens, more bathrooms etc.) in pursuing Economic Materialism;

(b)             do not upgrade their motor car as frequently, albeit the latest small diesel cars are materially cleaner;

(c)             use public transport, a Hills Hoist, etc more often;

(d)             do not use a dishwasher, electric clothes dryer etc as often;

(e)             recycle waste and conserve water; and

(f)              welcome government assistance to -

               *        recognize their Green bent with an "Aussie Green Team" Accreditation; and

               *        encourage other Australians to similarly reduce their Personal Carbon Footprint.

Section 4 below sets out the compilation logic and estimated number of Australian Sporting Teams which is derived from prudent/conservative use of estimates provided in annual research reports by Australian Sports Commission ("ASC") and ABS, as well as other data from the Internet on the number of organised Sporting Clubs, organised Health & Fitness Centres and non-organised Recreational Exercise Groups which comprise at least 10 Sporting Participants (from aged 15 years or older).

This Fourth Business Plan estimates the number of Australian -

(a)        Sporting Teams in the format deployed by 2006 ERASS and ABS research reports -

            (I.)         organised Sporting Clubs;

            (II.)        organised Health & Fitness Centres; and

            (II.)        non-organised Recreational Exercise Groups which exclude a materially number of Sporting Participants who Exercise Alone which are included in ASC and ABS estimates within non-organised Sporting Participants.

(b)        Sporting Participants are prudently materially lower than estimates that 2006 ERASS.

Awarding an "Aussie Green Team" Accreditation to up to 75,000 circa Australian Sporting Teams from amongst the 4,000,000 Sporting Participants (which exclude Sporting Participants who Exercise Alone) across 164 different organised and non-organised sporting and recreational exercise activities (listed from page 108 after Questionnaire in ERASS), with a mean 30 Sporting Participants circa, would represent 2,100,000 circa Australians (9.92% of Australia's population) who demonstrably want -

(a)        to live a Local Community Healthy Lifestyle with a low Personal Carbon Footprint; and

(b)        all Australian governments to "make the tough calls" to reduce Australia's high Carbon Footprint by First World standards.

A National Website(s) which includes a Register of "Aussie Green Sporting Teams"  could award within the Project Life 75,000 circa Australian Sporting Teams with one of the following would provide tangible evidence globally of over 2 million Australians who demonstrably want (a) and (b) above:

*           Gold "Aussie Green Team" Accreditation for greater than 2% below Australia's Personal Target Carbon Footprint; or

*           Silver "Aussie Green Team" Accreditation for within 2% of Australia's Personal Target Carbon Footprint; or

*           Bronze "Aussie Green Team" Accreditation for greater than 2% above and less than 5% above Australia's Personal Target Carbon Footprint.

Due to Average Australian's Current Carbon Footprint being so high, the Personal Carbon Footprint which many Sporting Participant's 'Declare', approx. 40% of Sporting Teams which apply for an "Aussie Green Team" Accreditation would initially not be awarded even a Bronze "Aussie Green Team" Accreditation.  However, provision would exist to re-apply three months later or for additional Sporting Participants (in particular Sporting Teams) to submit their Personal Eco-Profile to aggregate at least 10 Sporting Participant's with a Personal Carbon Footprint which qualified for a Gold, Silver or Bronze "Aussie Green Team" Accreditation.

Upon the Register of "Aussie Green Sporting Teams"  listing the Personal Carbon Footprint of at least 10 Sporting Participants ie Peter Brown 7.5 tonnes (3 global hectares), Wendy Smith 8.8 tonnes (3.52 gha) for each interested Sporting Team ie. Willoughby Mixed Touch Football Team 8.4 tonnes Ave (3.36 gha), each individual Sporting Participant would be entitled to update their Personal Carbon Footprint at three months intervals. 

Therefore, scope would exist for Sporting Participants in Sporting Teams to reapply up to four times each year if their Sporting Team -

(a)        was not awarded one of the above three levels of accreditation; or

(b)        sought to improve their existing 'Accreditation Level'.

Provision would also exist for the Sporting Team Organiser to delete one or more Sporting Participants from amongst the Sporting Participants in its Sporting Team Name.  However, each individual Sporting Team must have at least a 10 Sporting Participants who submitted a Personal Eco-Profile that satisfies the requirements for the Average Australian's Target Carbon Footprint.  Otherwise the "Aussie Green Team" Accreditation falls off the Register of "Aussie Green Sporting Teams"  by default.

*         minimum of 10 Sporting Participants
*         mean of 30 Sporting Participants
*         mode of 10 Sporting Participants
*         maximum 200 Sporting Participants circa

Research reports on Australians participation in sport and recreational exercise

4.         Estimate of the number of Sporting Teams in Australia with at least 10 Sporting Participants aged 15 years or older which could apply for an "Aussie Green Team" Accreditation from -

A.        estimates from the ASC and ABS research reports of Australians participation in physical activity for exercise, recreation and sport; and

 B.        other data on the number of Sporting Clubs, Health & Fitness Centres and Recreational Exercise Groups

Unlike ACNeilsen's definition of a Sporting Participant, the below analysis to estimate Australians, aged 15 years or older, who participate in physical activity for exercise, recreation and sport at least once per week in an Australian Sporting Team, comprising -

*            organised Sporting Club, organised Health & Fitness Centre; and

*            non-organised Recreational Exercise Groups,

also includes -

*            coaches, umpires and administrators,

*            Australians (from aged 15 years or older) who play a sport for only half a year ie. cricket in Summer,

because this Fourth Business Plan seeks to identify all Sporting Participants who are involved with an Australian Sporting Team who wish to apply under their particular Australian Sporting Team Name for an "Aussie Green Team" Accreditation. 

Each Sporting Participant may submit their Personal Eco-Profile for only one Sporting Team, as Australians who play say football in Winter and cricket in Summer would only submit their Personal Eco-Profile on behalf of one Australian Sporting Team Name.  Otherwise the integrity of the "Aussie Green Team" Accreditation would be compromised by double counting because Project "Aussie Green Team" Accreditation seeks to evidence the number of Sporting Participants and Australian Sporting Teams who -

(a)        live a Local Community Healthy Lifestyle which seeks to leave a low Personal Carbon Footprint; and

(b)        mandate all Australian governments to "make the tough calls" to reduce the Average Australian's Current Carbon Footprint which per capita is high amongst First World Countries.

As noted above, ACNeilsen's results in 2006 ERASS did not include coaches, umpires and exercise administrators.  Approx 67% of these would likely be separately included as Sporting Participants in other organised or non organised exercise activities.  ABS  6285.0 - Involvement in Organised Sport and Physical Activity, Australia, Apr 2007 Table 9 "PERSONS WITH NON-PLAYING INVOLVEMENT" by role, sex, and qualifications estimates 1,621,400 Sporting Participants fill the roles of "coach, instructor or teacher, referee or umpire, committee member or administrator, scorer or timekeeper, medical support, other involvement" - with a SE (standard error) of 25% to 50%.

5.         Drawing on 4A. and 4B. above to make some overall estimates of number of  Sporting Participants and Sporting Teams

Australian Sporting Participants participate in -

A.         at least 30,000 Sporting Clubs (ie Northern Districts C.C., South Sydney District Rugby League Club, Indooroopilly Golf Club, Palm Beach Surf Lifesavings Club, Grampians Horse Riding Club) which play 164 circa Sports. 

B.         a thousand circa Health & Fitness Centres with an average of 100 members.

C.         at least 30,000 local Recreational Exercise Groups with at least 10 Sporting Participants under a Team Structure which do not have any formal structure, whose Sporting Participants marshal at least once a week together for a swim at the local beach pool, a game of touch football, bicycle rides, bushwalking, harriers running, social golfing groups, rock climbing, scuba diving etc on a regular basis.  e-mail and websites has materially facilitated the growth of such local exercise groups.

6.         Procedure for an Australian Sporting Team using e-Research Techniques on a National Website(s) to apply for and receive an "Aussie Green Team" Accreditation enabling them to display an "Aussie Green Team" Emblem

7.         Awarding Sporting Teams which comply with (i) to (v) - at the top of this page - with an "Aussie Green Team" Accreditation enabling such Sporting Teams to display an "Aussie Green Team" Emblem

Upon Department of Climate Change (“DCC”) and/or Environment, Heritage and the Arts on a National Website(s) awarding an "Aussie Green Team" Accreditation  –

A.        the following would appear on a Register of "Aussie Green Sporting Teams"  on the National Website(s) -

(i)              Australian Sporting Team Name which has been awarded an "Aussie Green Team" Accreditation;

(ii)             Level of ""Aussie Green Team" Accreditation awarded to each Australian Sporting Team either -
*        Gold "Aussie Green Team" Accreditation; or
*        Silver "Aussie Green Team" Accreditation; or
*        Bronze "Aussie Green Team" Accreditation; and

(iii)            Name of each Sporting Participant in each Sporting Team who completed an Personal Eco-Profile to measure their Personal Carbon Footprint in both tonnes or GHGs produced and gha to convert those GHGs back to oxygen; and

 B.        those Australian Sporting Teams may -

 (i)         display (on their own Sporting Team website, if they have a website) a link to the specific page on the Register of "Aussie Green Sporting Teams"  webpage which recognises their accreditation;

(ii)        wear one of three "Aussie Green Team" Emblems on their 'Sporting Team Clothing'; and

(iii)       display one of three "Aussie Green Team" Emblems on paper based 'Sporting Team Stationery'.

8.        Summary

Apart from Petrolheads, the majority of 4 million circa Sporting Participants in 75,000 Australian Sporting Teams circa -

(i)         predominately lead a Local Community Healthy Lifestyle;

(ii)        leave a Personal Carbon Footprint which is smaller than many other Australians because of their penchant for active sport played in the great outdoors; and

(iii)       are more likely to be keen to -

        *          understand their Personal Carbon Footprint and their Primary Energy Carbon Contributors, and

        *          'Pledged' on the public domain, namely a National Website(s) to live by Ten Green Commandments.

Appealing to the 'Sporting Conscience' of the Sporting Participants of up to 75,000 Australian Sporting Teams to overtly 'Pledge' to live by Ten Green Commandments and 'Declare' to leave a small Personal Carbon Footprint would cost-effectively –

(A)       expeditiously educate Australians how to review their Primary Energy Carbon Contributors and reduce their Personal Carbon Footprint; and

(B)       kick-start an "Aussie Green Team" Accreditation programme to materially reduce Australians (Sporting Participants and non Sporting Participants) Personal Carbon Footprint by establishing a 'Common Purpose' to –

*           dismiss our penchant for bigger, faster and thirstier; and

  *           replace it with a want for and a pride in smaller, lighter, cheaper and safer consistent with the slogan on the European Commissions "You Control Climate Change" website "Turn Down. Switch Off. Recycle. Walk. Change".
