Finding another world class Disabled athlete

Section 13B(c) "Soliciting the support of Australian Paralympics Committee......" explains that APC has direct access to Australia's elite Disabled athletes.  It also notes three prominent elite Australian Disabled athletes with global pedigrees [Section 13(i)(ii)].

A few inspirational Disabled who overcome material Disabilities to conduct successful professional careers and compete in a Disabled Category

The Event Organiser has cycled as a pilot on a Tandem with 8 people whose Disability is vision impairment.  Five have lost >99% of their vision.  The 6th Krystal Keller lost all her sight due to cancer.

Sean Murphy, in his early 40s, is the bread-winner for a family of 4, walks 1.2km to/from Mt Colah station each work day, alights at Strathfield and walks to/from his office at Burwood and works in I.T.

Lindy Hou, in her early 40s, holds a few world tandem cycling records and is in the Australian Paralympics Team.  Lindy spends an average of 3 hours on a bike or exercise each day, such are the demands to remain at the top of her sport.

Toby Sullivan, aged 22, was in a car accident when he was 3 which, in addition to rendering him blind, resulted in material damage to motor skill on his RHS.  Toby has only about 10% function in his right hand, and can't use click-in cleats because he doesn't have sufficient control over his right foot to always click into the pedal in-time.

All 8 of the vision impaired that the Event Organiser has ridden on a Tandem have demonstrated enormous fortitude and a willingness to get on with life.

Anthony Fowler, 16, has only 2o vision.  Most people have 180o vision.  Anthony will lose the remaining 2o in the next year or so, rendering him blind.  Anthony presently cycles a normal bike on the track and has commenced cycling a tandem with his dad.

There is no shortage of courageous Disabled who would welcome the opportunity to ride a Tandem or Speciality Bicycle in one of the 5 Disabled Categories on the Finals Day.

Contrasting down and outers with the leaders of industry who both seek refuge on a bike where everyone is equal

The Sydney Morning Herald on Sat 24 Feb '07 featured an article by English cricket journalist, Peter Roebuck, "On the other side of despair, a late bloomer finds the best dry spell of his life" which profiled an aboriginal, John Ducket, who had grown up around violence, trouble, and booze and failure.

"Ducket's early years were marked by a succession of robberies to get money for grog and drugs, followed by sentences to boys homes and prisons including Long Bay, Grafton, and Cessnock.  Between 13 and 18 he was mostly locked up.  Most of his friends were following the same path.  He committed plenty of robberies and other stuff he prefers not to dwell on. His addictions were numerous, alcohol, marijuana and later heroin, a drug he liked because it took him away instantaneously.  When he came across heroine he though he'd "hit the jackpot".  Always he was seeking the high, the escape.  Prison gave him everything he needed.  The drugs were readily available.  Why bother to get out?  He'd only come back."

But Ducket turned his life around after 15 years of acute alcoholism by joining the Crusaders Club, attached to Alcoholics Anonymous, whereupon John was chosen to represent NSW in the annual Aboriginal tournament in Alice Springs.

Success in Cricket, and the associated bonhomie, gave Duckett a reason to dry out and cease crime required to pay for his addictions.

Cycling attracts people from all walks of life.  The Home Page of www.Muggaccinos.com includes "Social intercourse with a crew of reprobates and misfits who don't take 'emselve's seriously.  Come Sunday, we're all equal, 'cause on a push bike there ain't no rank."  Muggaccinos doesn't contain any jailbirds.  However, it does include Resolute DieHards which points out that all ride groups contain such HardHeads Eugene Schilter, from Parramatta Cycling Club in Sydney held the record for cycling around Australia unsupported (carrying food, tent and sleeping bag in panniers on his bike) in 55 days 17 hrs in 2004 Danish cyclist, Erik Straarup, lowered it in 2008 to 51 days and 47 minutes Dave Byrnes attempted to break it shortly after but ended his attempt after being hit by a truck, when he wasn't badly injured.

Garry aka Whiskers of Cyclops ride group has also completed the 2003 and 2007 PBP.  The cycling fraternity in Sydney and Canberra know of hundreds of colourful DieHards who let their legs and mental toughness do the talking.

The following two charities have assisted hundreds of Australians, who started life from the wrong side of town - many getting caught-up with hard drugs and/or spending time in jail, turn their lives around:

(i)        Father Chris Riley's "Youth off the streets".

(ii)       Ron and Judith Barb's "Youth In Search"

Father Chris Riley and Ron and Judith Barb can cite hundreds of teenagers who have turned their lives around, some of whom rely on strenuous exercise to compliment their inner strengths to handle life's challenges.

The Application Form to compete in the Annual KOM Challenge Series will include a Personal Profile to identify further colourful characters from both side of town to provide suitable Personal Profiles for 2 episodes of RTV Series.

Section 1 notes the following Type-A leaders of industry which are committed road cyclists to satisfy their competitive instincts during their leisure time:

*          ANZ CEO, John McFarlane

*          BHP Billiton's CEO, Chip Goodyear

*          National Australia Bank CEO, John Stewart

*          President of the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, judge Stuart Morris

*          Patrick Corporation CEO, Chris Corrigan

*          Leighton Holding's CEO, Wal King

*          Federal Minister for Health & Ageing, Tony Abbott

*          Former Deputy Prime Minister, John Anderson

*          Mark Vaile, Jackie Kelly and Pat Farmer

The Event Organiser, Phil Johnston, and Event Team member, Karen Bagshaw, will garner support from APC and the 30 Registered Charities listed in Section 13B(d)(i) and Schedule VIII in order to negotiate a contract with one of the television networks to run up to 4 @ 50 min episodes featuring -

1st 50 minutes episode

Profile the jobs and training regimes of Type-A leaders of industry and government -

*        3 CEOs from the finance, legal, accounting, marketing, manufacturing from Australia largest companies who qualify in the Top 20 in their Age Division;

*        2 political leaders; and

*        1 owner of a large private company.

Compare the backgrounds and training regimes of -

*        5 cyclists from the other side of town who may have done time, or led a colourful life due to a variety of human interest stories.

2nd 50 minutes episode

(a)        Profile John Mclean, Michael Milton and Louise Sauvage and announce a search for another world class Disabled athlete from amongst Elite Disabled Athletes Administered by Australian Paralympics Committee administered by APC and from amongst Registered Charities for the Disabled.  Explain role of Australian Paralympics Committee and introduce 10 Disabled athletes in the Disabled Category they are competing in, and the equipment they will use and the support people ie. Pilots for Tandem riders.

(b)        Profile a few inspirational Disabled who overcome material Disabilities to lead successful professional careers and compete in a Disabled Category in the Finals Day of Saturday, 21 May 2011  ie lawyer Darren Fittler.

3rd 50 minutes episode

Selected footage from the 3 KOM Climbs by Qualifiers from drawn from both sides of town introduced in "1st 50 minutes episode" (above) highlighting the collegiate environment, the expectation, passion, and exhilaration.

4th 50 minute episode

Selected footage from 2 KOM Climbs by Disabled Climbers across the 5 Disabled Categories introduced in "2nd 50 minutes episode" (above), highlighting the assistance by 'Pilot' partners for Tandem cyclists, LCCBSG, the expectation, passion and exhilaration.

The RTV Production Fee payable by the RTV Producer for exclusive rights to produce and televise the RTV Series would be paid to the Trust Fund for Wheelchair Sports Association NSW to purchase Tandems and Specialty Bicycles for Disabled who support the Disabled Category Finals Day who have limited financial means.

The Event Organiser -

(A)       possesses the negotiating acumen to secure a RTV Producer to run a 4 @ 50 minute episodes; and

(B)       conducted very preliminary discussions with a RTV Executive Producer at Nine Network Australia in Feb 2007

Having made that point, the Event Team would be comfortable with any of the Four Public Sector Equity Holders dealing directly with the RTV Producer re receipt and dissemination of a RTV Production Fee, so the Event Team had no involvement with an RTV Production Fee payable by the Television Network for the rights to produce the proposed 4 RTV Series episodes, contingent upon the RTV Production Fee being disseminated to a Trust Fund controlled by APC and Wheelchair Sports Assoc NSW, notwithstanding that Disabled in NSW are patently not limited to spinal injuries.

(a) and (b) under "2nd 50 minutes episode" above will provide memorable footage of a handful of selected elite Disabled athletes, and a few inspirational Disabled who overcome material Disabilities, to lead successful lives and compete.

The 2nd & 4th episodes would highlight the emotional and physical experience of -

(i)              committing to the Inaugural Annual KOM Challenge Series;

(ii)             becoming familiar with the dedicated, tailored, cycling equipment to accommodate their particular disability or illness;

(iii)           training with a buddy or being "adopted" by a local bicycle user group; and

(iv)           competing on the day against others with similar disabilities in a collegiate, caring environment.

As noted in Section 10, most of the Resolute DieHards within cycling have, at some time in the past, experienced serious injury and illness.  It makes them more determined to make every post a winnerThere are other Michael Milton's Louise Sauvage's and John McLean's across Australia, who with encouragement and assistance, can perform similar super human feats.  There are many more vision impaired and others with different disabilities or afflictions who can cycle up 2 KOM Climbs -

(i)         using a Hand Cycle as a paraplegic; or

(ii)        cycle with a prosthesis because one leg has been amputated due to cancer or trauma accident, or because a limb or hip has worn out.

The Event Organiser, Phil Johnston and 'Disabled Co-ordinator', Karen Bagshaw -

(A)        possess the commitment and resolve to facilitate with the Registered Charities listed in Section 13B(d)(i) securing 100 Disabled Cyclists to commit to the Inaugural Annual KOM Challenge Series and assist them find a support group; and

(B)        will approach associated local councils and local business groups within the Disabled Cyclist's neighbourhood for financial support if a dedicated speciality bicycle machine is required and no monies are available.

As set out in Annexure IV. Stakeholders:  1. Priority ranking and  2. Reasons for interest and Annexure VI. Microsoft Project 2007 sets out Task Schedule, "Predecessors", and associated Gantt Chart, the Event Team would -

(i)         lobby Departments of Health & Ageing, Environment, DIISR, RET and RTA, as well as local government, for support for both the Abled Age Divisions and Disabled Categories, including directly inviting prominent politicians to register Climbs at www.KOMpm.com in order to qualify for the Semi-Finals;

(ii)        lobby "Type-A" senior execs of Australia's largest companies to log Climb Times to qualify for the Inaugural Annual KOM Challenge Series; and

(iii)       meet with Australian Paralympic Committee to gain their support to encourage elite Disabled athletes under their tutelage to support the Inaugural Annual KOM Challenge Series by committing the RTV Production Fee payable by a TV network for a RTV Series to Wheelchair Sports Association NSW.
