Lawn Bowls means for the YELP Holistic First Business Plan one of 6 MREAs (for the 21½ Months Tenure Of Pilot) as described in -

*           item 2 of 6 Moderate Recreational Exercise Activities (for the 20 Months Pilot); and

*           item 14 of "900+ Existing LDREGs in NSW across"

Has appeared in every Commonwealth Games since 1930, except 1966.  Types of competition include Singles, Doubles and Rinks/Fours for each sex.  Visually Impaired also play Lawn Bowls.  Commonwealth Games Lawn Bowls and the World Championships are the sport's most important events.

To increase the contemporary appeal of the sport to mainstream Australia, Bowls Australia has launched its 'Get on the Green'' national program promoted and delivered consistently throughout Australia, supported by educational and delivery resources.  'Get on the Green'' is designed to increase new memberships by repositioning the game as a casual, accessible and relaxed moderate sport that conveys a message of fun, flexibility and simple rules.  Key elements are:

  • Accessibility to programs and equipment;

  • Convenient time slots for working professionals;
  • Social interaction and the development of a friendly and fun environments;
  • Relaxed dress codes; and
  • Promotion of club membership linkages.

The program comprises a 6-week structured 60-90 minute playing modified and traditional game formats. Games are fun and fast paced and designed to suit all skill levels from beginners to experienced bowlers.  Participants may participate as an individual or a team in mixed competitions/games.  Clubs provide all equipment to participants at no extra cost.  'Get on the Green' targets 20-50 year olds who are new or existing social bowlers in metropolitan and regional areas - delivered through a minimum of 250 local bowling clubs over 3 years.

Being a MREA, Lawn Bowls does not provide a cardio vascular workout, however it is a complex game which challenges the mind and counters isolation and Depression, particularly amongst the elderly.  Lawn Bowls possesses greater scope than the other 5 MREAs to foster LCCBSGs.
