NSW State 'Schools Spectacular' means an Australian variety show featuring more than 3,000 young students, drawn from the NSW State Schools, which is performed annually at the Sydney Entertainment Centre.

Students from more than 300 NSW public schools, from the remote outback to the inner city, rehearse for months in preparation for four shows over two days and nights. Audiences that pack Sydney Entertainment Centre are uplifted by the wealth of talent and the dedication, creativity and commitment of the teachers who nurture it.

Hosted by John Foreman since 2005, this inspirational performing arts showcase - now in its 27th year - is a dazzling display of colour, energy and music that reflects the optimism and joy of its participants.  The Schools Spectacular has launched the careers of a host of Australia's most popular entertainers and has introduced tens of thousands of public school students to the thrill of performing to huge live audiences.

Featuring 3,000 singers, dancers and musicians, it is a brilliantly choreographed and costumed production on an epic scale.  Each annual 'Schools Spectacular' is made up of many different pieces.  A typical piece would have a spotlighted soloist singing on an elevated platform in the arena, surrounded by many dancers and actors.  On the stage, the orchestra would be playing the instrumental part of the song while the choirs behind and next to the orchestra would be singing the chorus of the song.

      Schools Spectacular 2005

There is no show of this scale and quality anywhere in the world - acknowledged by the Guinness Book of Records as the world's biggest variety show.  Schools Spectacular is the most heart-warming entertainment event of the year.

Human Nature's Andrew, Michael, Toby and Phil have come a long way since 1989 when they did their first gig, representing Hurlstone Agricultural High, at the Schools Spectacular. Shannon Brown went on to sing in the Opening Ceremony of the 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and toured Europe with the hugely successful The Ten Tenors, while Paulini Curuenavuli achieved fame through Australian Idol.  John Foreman went on to become Bert Newton's musical director on GMA and later Australian Idol, and now hosts the Schools Spectacular.

The first Schools Spectacular was in 1983 and was intended to be a sound test for the Sydney Entertainment Centre. Since then, the Schools Spectacular has evolved in ways no one could have imagined back then.

The Schools Spectacular is funded by 'The Arts Unit' of the NSW Department of Education and Training, with the help and sponsorship by Cisco Systems.  Highlights are broadcast each year by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
