Carclew Youth Arts means South Australia’s only multi-artform and cultural organisation, formed in 1972, which is dedicated to artistic outcomes by and for people aged 26 and under.  It provides young people with opportunities to try different artforms, supports emerging artists to develop their craft and advocates for youth arts practice.

Carclew’s programs consist of workshops, events, arts projects, funding programs, and skill development opportunities, which:

  • Provide funding, scholarships and mentoring opportunities for South Australian artists aged 26 and under.

  • Provide funding for youth arts organisations working with children and young people.
  • Connect artists with South Australian schools, teachers and students.
  • Help young South Australians connect with arts industry professionals.
  • Provide South Australian artists with affordable rehearsal, performance and exhibition spaces.
  • Profile and celebrating young South Australian artists.
  • Connect children and young people to the arts across South Australia.

Carclew Youth Arts is at the forefront of the South Australian youth artscape.  It’s a passionate organisation, fuelled by the innovation of youth culture and driven to develop the next generation of artistic minds. Since 1972, Carclew has been actively moulding South Australia into a creative community and has been recognised for its contributions.

Sponsors include  the Australian Govt, Govt of South Australia, Brisbane City Council and BHP Billiton.

Carclew Youth Arts recently terminated its Lowdown performing arts magazine, after a 30 year tenure as Australia’s leading youth performing arts magazine, making it one of Australia’s oldest continuing performing arts publications.  At various times Lowdown was distributed to over 70 countries and to every school in Australia, covered youth arts in six continents and in every State and Territory, provided a forum where the Australian youth arts sector could express itself and reflected the vibrant diversity of youth arts across Australia and the world. In Sept 2011 Lowdown ceased its operations. Its legacy lives on, however, here in The Lowdown Archive, a wealth of information about the history, development, debates and philosophy of Australian youth performing arts and the productions that have performed to tens of millions of Australians, young and old.  Tony Mack proposes a web archive.
