Summary of Dr Kenneth Cooper who created the phenomenon of Aerobics

A  U.S. Air Force physician, Dr. Kenneth Cooper, pioneered the merits of regular aerobic exercise following publication of his first bestseller, Aerobics, in 1968, which introduced a new word and a new concept to America and ultimately the Western World.

Dr Cooper explored the relationship between cardiovascular fitness and health and longevity.  The Cooper philosophy, "It is easier to maintain good health through proper exercise, diet, and emotional balance than to regain it once it is lost," has been proven valid in scientific research.

The Institute's landmark eight-year study of 13,000 patients showed that individuals with a sedentary lifestyle are four times as likely to die from cardiovascular disease as those who exercise moderately.  The Cooper database, the largest in the world based on treadmill stress testing as a measure of fitness, is now following almost 100,000 patients.

Today Dr. Cooper is recognized as a leader of the international physical fitness movement and credited with motivating more people to exercise in pursuit of good health than any other person, leads the multi-division Cooper Aerobics Centre.  He holds a B.S. degree and an M.D. degree from the University of Oklahoma as well as an M.P.H. degree from the Harvard University School of Public Health, and he is certified by the American Board of Preventive Medicine.  A 650-person staff shares Dr. Cooper’s mission to educate and encourage optimum health in as many segments of the population as possible.

Dr. Cooper sets an example for maintaining a healthy lifestyle by exercising at Cooper Aerobics Center on a regular basis.

What can we learn from the above summation of the most well known advocate of aerobics?

Dr Cooper's research proves regular rigorous exercise -

  • Increases cardiovascular endurance as the heart and lungs put forth more effort to meet the increased demand by the muscles for more oxygen;

  • Decreases heart rate; and
  • Lowers cholesterol and blood pressure.

Analysis of Dr Cooper's enterprises suggest that marketing rigorous exercise in gyms, spas etc via the following has been highly lucrative:

  1. Two Cooper Aerobics Activity Centres (now Cooper Fitness Center).

  2. The Cooper Guest Lodge.

  3. The Cooper Institute.

  4. A 30-acre campus, Cooper Spa, offering participants four, six, or 13-day sessions for total wellness assessment and lifestyle modification.

  5. Cooper Ventures consulting services.

  6. Cooper Concepts, developer of Cooper Complete nutritional supplements.

  7. Nationally syndicated radio show, “Healthy Living from the Cooper Aerobics Center.”
