Body Mass Index or BMI means the medical standard used as a proxy for a measure of body fat.  BMI is calculated by dividing a person's weight in kilos by height in metres squared.

BMI Categories:

  • Normal weight = 18.5 - 24.9

  • Overweight = 25 - 29.9
  • Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater.

For example if you weigh 68kg and are 1.8 metres tall, you calculate BMI: 68 ÷ (1.8 x 1.8) = 20.9, which falls into the normal weight category.

Note: BMI is based on weight and is not a direct measure of fat.  A solid, broad shouldered European may have a similar BMI to an adult with skinny limbs who is overweight. Hence BMI is a crude comparative measurement, but a useful indicator.
