Co authors of Climate Change in Australia, Dr. Penny Whetton, CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research and Scott Power, of the Bureau of Meteorology, project:

• "Temperatures across Australia will rise by about 1 degree by 2030, and rainfall will decline by up to 5 per cent".

• "There will also be changes in temperature extremes, with fewer frosts and substantially more days over 35 degrees."

• "With high emissions, the chance of exceeding 4 degrees is around 10 per cent in most coastal areas, and 20-50 per cent inland".

• "If emissions are low, we anticipate warming of between 1 and 2.5 degrees around 2070, with a best estimate of 1.8 degrees".

• "And it is bitterly disappointing to have to report that the rainfall that has occurred during the last month over the Murray Darling basin has turned out to be the lowest on record,"

• "Under the low emissions scenario in 2070, annual rainfall decreases in southern Australia range up to 20 per cent."
