Payment Cards means according to the "Murray Financial System Enquiry - Payments Sector" a number of participants compete within Debit Card and Credit Cards Payment Schemes. They compete on issuing Payment Cards and associated services to customers and providing acceptance facilities and associated services to Merchants.

The major banks are -

(a)        the main issuers of Payment Cards, with competition from most other Authorised Deposit-taking Institutions and a number of non-bank issuers; and

(b)        also the main providers of acceptance facilities, with competition from other ADIs and Tyro Payments.

In addition, some of the largest Merchants, including the major supermarkets, Harvey Norman 'et al',have in-house payment acceptance facilities.
