Water

Install a low flow shower head:  Showers account for ⅔ of water heating costs.  Change showerheads in your home to low-flow heads. Take it one step further by taking shorter showers. And give the bath a big flick because they swallow H2O.

Off Peak Water Heating may be costing you more than you realise.  If the kids have grown up and moved out, the Off-Peak Water Heater may be boiling up a lot of water that you aren’t using and don’t need.  Ask a friend with practical skills to help you check it out.

Adjust your hot water heater:  Is the temperature of your shower scalding hot? You shouldn't even have that option.

Wash your clothes in cold water:  Hot water is not necessary for general clothes washing. In fact, it's only needed for greasy or extremely dirty items. There are even special detergents that promise to get clothes hot water clean in cold water temperatures. 

Outsmart Your Appliances.  If you must use then, run your dishwasher and your laundry machines only when you have full loads.

Localise Your Garden.  Native plants use less water and nourish birds and bees.

Avoid Concrete.  Rain water can percolate through the soil instead of flowing away into storm drains, which conserves water by keeping it on your property.

Old technology automatic sewerage systems that incessantly flush water should be adjusted to only flush after use.  If your employer hasn’t fitted a new style flusher, talk to him about it, as it will also save him money.
