Summary notes of:
Lifescripts – Increased funding

Why is this important?

•     Smoking, poor nutrition, alcohol misuse, physical inactivity and unhealthy weight are contributing to the rising incidence of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer and arthritis. These diseases account for nearly 80 per cent of the total burden of disease and injury in Australia, and more than two thirds of all health expenditure.

•     This initiative gives general practice the skills to help patients adopt healthier behaviours and reduce the burden of chronic disease on the Australian community.

Who will benefit?

•     People whose lifestyle may contribute to later chronic disease will be given the encouragement they need to adopt a healthier lifestyle and improve their quality of life.

What funding is the Government committing to the initiative?

•     The Commonwealth has committed an additional $2.7 million over the next four years to maximise take-up of the programme and further refine training taking total funding to $5.5 million.
