Pimpernel's rap-up of Monday, 11 June, impromptu Hornsby to Calga and Bobbin Head - 103km - due to early abominable post-storm conditions We pulled the pin on our scheduled Windsor Ride 'cause the Sackville Ferry was out-of-action due to high river levels and broken cable. With the forecast of an early shower, not too many were keen to pull their head out from under the covers early Monday morn' after the battering that Sydney had taken over the previous few days. Guy aka Lawyer and Pimpernel showed up at Hornsby at the designated time of 7.45am. and agreed upon an abbreviated ride North to Calga. A late running BeanCounter appeared out of the swirling fog just before Pie in the Sky, whereupon we then headed up to Mt White, some high cloud, the fog had cleared and still no sun. The only hitch to the day was that Guy got a flat just prior to Road Warrior’s café. By the time we realised something was wrong, Guy sped past as he’d changed the tube in record time and there was no stopping him! Grant left us at this point while Guy and I continued on to Calga.
Just as we turned for home, the cloud lifted and we ended up with a perfect cycling day, warm and sunny and no wind. It was a Corker! Stopped at Pie in the Sky and chatted in the sunshine with three cheerful Bike North characters, Simon aka RockSolid, Frank and John McGregor. Then to give Guy another hill to climb before he embarks on this trip to The Dolomites, we dropped down to Bobbin Head, and came back the same way (the more challenging side) via the delightful Asquith Golf Course to Hornsby to clock up just over 100 clicks for the day. All in all a good day’s cycling and one not to be missed, particularly as it developed into a sunny Winter’s day. Scribe 11 June 2007 |
