Detailed Ride Description:

¨                       Longer Ride - Quatre Montagnes [82kms]
Arrive Turramurra car park [North/East side of station] by 6:45am for a 6:55am departure cycling in/out of Bobbin Head, arriving at Kalkari Reserve for a 5 min Sag Stop after 14kms around 7:40am.  Heading for Galston Gorge, via Hornsby Heights, we take a left around Asquith Golf Course into Belmont Pde. [becomes Royston Rd] avoiding 2kms of bumps over concrete expansion joints.  We join Pac. Highway after making right turn into Baldwin St and crossing over railway line at Asquith train station where we continue south and shortly take a right into Galston Rd and pedal twds Hornsby Heights.

¨                       Shorter Rides - Two Hills [52kms]
Arrive at Hornsby car-park [100 metres Nth/West of the Railway Hotel in Jersey St] by 7:30m for a 7:40am roll out cycling north up Jersey St, with a left after 500 metres, followed by a right 60 metres later [at traffic lights] on to Old Pacific Highway for about 3kms where you turn left at lights into Galston Rd twds Hornsby Heights.

The route is now common for both, descending to Galston Gorge, then climbing for 3kms to Crosslands Rd veer left to Galston, taking left turn immediately prior to roundabout into Green Shades Café for 30 min. repast

Around 9am, we commence a variation of a new 6km adjunct North/West into Glenorie which provides two testing climbs:

¨                       Left heading West along Galston Rd for 800m

¨                       Right heading North along Johnson Ave for 100m

¨                       Left heading N/W along Sallaway Rd for 800m

¨                       Right heading West along Mid-Dural Rd for 400m

¨                       Right heading North along Old Northern Rd for 1.9km

¨                       Right heading East along Wylds Rd for 1.8km

Thence we pedal North along Arcadia Rd which changes to Bay Rd, at pastoral Berrilee, where we shortly descend to picturesque Berowra Waters for the ride on the punt.  After another enjoyable climb, we take a 2nd 5 min Sag Stop at the Health Food store before re-entering the Old Pacific H'way from Berowra Waters Rd. to cycle South -

¨                       either entering Bobbin Head;

¨                       or continuing onto Hornsby.

Scribe’s rap-up of 18 Feb - “Tour de Windsor / Sackville - Iron Horse from East Richmond to Marayong

With 48.7km on the dial and after 2 hrs pedaling, a veritable handful of crew [Eric, Blonde Bombshell, Dieter, Bill N, and PJ] gathered smack on schedule at 9am on a warm, partially o’cast morn for a pleasant repast at Kate’s Place Windsor.  [Around 6:20am Widget’s Volvo started making all sorts of “crunch/clonk/kaput” noises, barely 100m from home, which ended her ride - Who’d buy a Volvo?].

Bacon ‘n eggs under the shade on the front verandah proved popular.  Following which Bill had to skip our awaiting northern excursion to rural Wilberforce, Ebenezer and Sackville, and bade us farewell around 9:30am - opting to retrace his steps on two wheels, ‘cause the train only runs once an hour, and wouldn’t you know it.

The rest of us headed N/W over the Old Windsor Bridge on our 41.4km anti-clockwise second leg into Duelling Banjos, Deliverance Country.  The opportunity to visit within Lower Portland, with the windy, curly Hawkesbury River fleetingly on our right, proved a pleasant attraction.

PJ did labour the point to all present that after returning thru Windsor, “we aren’t cycling all the way to Richmond, rather picking up the Old Rattler at East Richmond station” - ‘cause the swill ‘n grits served at Richmond Golf Club, leave the mediocre selection of shops at Richmond for dead, and why cycle due West, only to catch a train back due East.  All acknowledged they new the turn-off to East Richmond, but none of ‘em took it.

Around 1pm Eric and PJ waved tah-tars to Dieter/Helga at the Pennant Hills off-road [from M2] and continued on to the “phone tower” exit - 100m short of a big blue “Macq Uni exit sign”.

Alas, after successfully negotiating a leafy, mulch covered Browns Water Hole cycle path, that dreaded/frightful vertical climb up the last section of Kissing Point Rd. was still to come.  We made it without walking, however, both of us resorted to our lowest gear and could be confused for two stationary cyclists.

Footnote - Eric clocked 126km at 24.5kms, returning to ‘Turra at 1:50pm.. Those numbers are an ominous warning to his old foes.  Cause since his boss formed the Biesdorf Cycle Racing Team [buying ‘em all smickers Avanti bikes] and since Eric commenced “before work” sprint-training on the M2 with colleagues half his age, Papa Bear, with 7 Audax scalps to his credit, has become a driven, focused, single-minded competitor who can’t be taken lightly - seemingly intent on leaving his mark on racing, in a similar fashion to his KOM accreditations at Bright.

What Market Intelligence via e-mail can come up with - A cyclist on the other side of the globe ain't that much different to Muggs!

The Scribe engages in mkt intelligence on cycle groups in the USA to compare how they write their weekly newssheets.  One of PJ's e-mails attracted a response from a colourful, mature lady (been a resident of terra firma longer than any Mugg past or present), Elinor D. from Scottsdale Az USA - hottest city outside the Arab States.

Eli’s e-mail address is ejcatclaw@uswest.net is indicative of her laugh at adversity persona, 'cause Elinor has had her share of downs - having lost 2 husbands who've gone to the great white cloud - the latter was also a devil-may-care cyclist.  She also got seriously “mugged” once – the way they do it in the States, “bashed over the head and left for dead”.  Still in full time employment with the US equivalent of the RTA, "where cyclists get considered in road planning."

If you find a few mins to access www.muggaccinos.com, and a clunk on the 2nd last hotlink "Guest Page - EJ CatClaw", I don’t think you’ll be disappointed to read [from extracts from her e-mails to PJ] how a delightful old stick relies on cycling her Bent [short for recumbent].  A move to Sydney, would render Widget and The Scribe redundant.
