this Ride Description and spend 5 min reviewing your UBD
Final section of our
route to Whale Beach offers two options. After
Sag Stop at Church Point, via -
(i) very hilly Newport Arms/Clareville/Careel Bay to avoid a
tight main road section of Barrenjoey Rd thru Bilgola Beach; or
(ii) up main beach road (Barrenjoey Rd
) by turning Left into Darley
St and then Left into Barrenjoey Rd past Bungan Beach, Newport, Bilgola,
Avalon and Right into Whale Beach Rd
The above (i) diversion includes a few short sharp climbs
finishing with a
'killer' 600m 21o climb up
Loombah St.
So weaker riders,
or those without an exceedingly low gear, may opt to ride our old route on the main beach road,
as noted at (ii) above, which is much flatter.
Cycle
two abreast on single lane roads at own risk, and never
ride two abreast with a unbroken centre line
Keep well to LHS
of the road and get
off the road at Sag Stops
-
Twds the end of our ride, don't
cross 3 lanes of traffic at lights at McCarrs Creek Rd back onto Mona Vale Rd.
Rather return
along Larool Rd, or use the tunnel under Mona Vale Rd

81km over shorter route
NOTE:
After
climbing to the apex of McCarrs Creek Rd, either take the tunnel under Mona Vale
Rd or retrace along Larool Rd to
Terrey Hills Fruit Barn and R at lights onto Mona Vale Rd.
Recommend you don't
enter Mona Vale Rd at lights at McCarrs Creek Rd, as motorists coming from the coast are doing 80+
clicks and aren't impeded by the traffic lights granting us access to
Mona Vale Rd.
Follow normal route to
Loombah St - i.e., L into King St from Gladstone St (Newport); L into Bardo
Rd; follow on into Nooal St; L into Irrubel Rd and follow onto Prince Alfred
Pde.
Route differs from here:
After Royal Motor Yacht Club turnoff - turn R into Herbert Avenue (this is a
slighlty tricky turn because it crosses the direction of traffic on a rise -
each time I have done it this has not been a problem) for the 1st stage of the
climb. After about 400 metres, R into Wallumatta Rd (Herbert Ave continues
straight to a dead end) - this is a safe turn. Continue to climb for about
150 m and then road levels off and doubles back for views over Pittwater
(Bayview). Then L into Cheryl Cr - this is a steep section but not as scary
as the Steep Climb sign suggests - climb is about 200 metres and then levels
out pretty much at the top of the hill and amazing views all around. Follow
Cheryl Cr into Birubi Cr - pass Algona St to your L and take the next L into
Terama St. At the end of Terama St, you will see the top of Loombah St on
your left - down below you. Turn L and take next right into Lower Plateau Rd
and you are back on the normal route.
Gradients are: 1st 200m
after turn into Herbert Ave: 12.7% and 13.0% - undulations for 400m then
another 12% over 100m. Undulations for next 1,400m then 200 m climb of 13.3%
and 17.3% (Cheryl Cr) thne undulations for 400m. then a steady climb for 400m
made up of 11.8%, 7.3%, 9.1% and 8.2%.
I found each of the climbs
no worse than any we have done - they are short - and should be manageable by
all doubles. The keen can continue along and do Loombah St and we meet at the
turnoff to Lower Plateau Rd.
There is an option at the
front of this to turn R into Bardo Rd; L into Nullaburra Rd and L into
Wallumatta Rd and thence R into Cheryl Cr. I have not tested how steep this
is - I suspect it may be quite an effort. Happy to check it out on a future
ride.
