Scribe's rap-up of Sunday, 16 March, Tour de Whale Beach - 72km
With the mornings getting later, a dozen crew rolled-out of St Ives 5 min late at 7:25am. Arno, Sarah, Ross and Jodie were first-timers [pics in order hereunder], and we evidenced later that they can all hammer, particularly Ross who scaled Newport hill as though it was "a mere pimple on the backside of an elephant. "
Scribe mused that a few of the stalwarts must 've been on the RTA Big Ride, 'cause we were shy on regulars, with ToothFairy, Whippet, Navigator 'n Scribe flying the flag. With Tornado AWOL, Bank Teller opted for the direct route up Barrenjoey Rd, rather than the 'up hill and down dale' back-track via the Newport Arms/Clareville. After 35km with the clouds "decidedly dark up-ahead", we arrived at Whale Beach around 9am.
Bazza 'n BackPacker grabbed a quick dip in the briny as evidenced in the below team pic. Twas a sloshfest as we headed twds our 1st Sag Stop on the return leg of "The Serpentine lookout" . After a 2nd Sag Stop at the crest of Newport Hill, not unsurprisingly, no one was interested in visiting Akuna Bay on the return route. Around midday, after an abridged out 'n back route of 72km to the beach "one down from Palm", a few of us, incl the four afore-pictured Mugg tyros, sucked caffeine back at Pattisons' Patisserie and then pissed-off in their respective directions. As we were "cutting-out" of the familiar post-ride Nosh Stop, two regulars, Whippet 'n Gene Autry, limped-in after suffering punctures out-on-the-trail. The Scribe 16 Mar '03 |
