Over brunch we will ascertain if everyone is cycling straight up McCarrs Creek Rd to St Ives with an ETR of 1:10pm [81km]. Or if anyone wants to R at 12:15pm [68.6km] to take the scenic route via Akuna Bay for a 3rd Nosh Stop at 1:40pm [82.4km], returning to Pattisons Patisserie St Ives for more grub 'n drugs at 2:30pm [93.2km]. Whippet's rap-up of Sunday 26 August, "Brunch at Brooklyn on the Pier" - 82km The scheduled Ferry Boat ride was cancelled at the eleventh hour and became "Brunch at Brooklyn on the Pier" - 82km. The Rohini St Carpark Turra’ was a blaze with colour, full of cars and bikes being assembled, but sadly, most were off to find Warrimoo. After the big farewell, this Muggs' ride had a low key start, gliding down Bobbin Head, and then it seemed just a little climb to Kalkari. First in, ToothFairy escorted by Temperate. Caroline, who had a 50km road race the previous day (+ ride home) was content with a soft start, just spinning and a warm up. We may have attracted a new member after Whippet put in yeoman’s bid on lone bike rider, Alain, to join us at our Kalkari Sag Stop. The Red Herring Conspiracy: The small contingent made a unanimous decision, over cappuccino, muggaccino, or was it Eggs Benedictine, (Dutch courage), bacon & egg rolls, etc. All had more pressing matters to attend elsewhere. Was it the sub-standard leaky old boat, rough seas. Nerr! just the whit or the whip of "The Globetrotting Galloping Gourmet’’ was sadly lacking. With threatening skies gathering from forecast afternoon thunder storms, and possible hail beckoning, the scurry from the Brooklyn Pier to Pie in the Sky was hotly contested by the half dozen who enjoyed the ambience on the water’s edge - four old foxes (Whippet, Temperate & new chum Alain with his treadley spinning like a Swiss clock) and two youngish ladies who added respectability - Caroline and ToothFairy. Claud was last away but had been told to move up front along Brooklyn Rd before the 3.9km slog up OPH. Whippet and Claud, moved ahead while Swiss Watch was charming in the pack. Whippet jumped out of his seat and was not headed, leaving the battle for minor places between the long, slow cranks of Big Gears “Temperate” and the precision of a Swiss Watch that needed winding. We managed to snavel a table at PitS, which was packed with race cyclist and bikes from South Sydney Cycle Club. (One had the misfortune of breaking his Moser bike’s down tube at the gear cable anchor points.) However, Whippet and Temperate were left (standing cup in hand) to chase the pack with a reversal of form. Our ladies decided to pause only, putting brains up front and continue dry back to Turra’, arriving around midday, with 82km on the dial. Claud returned to Hornsby. Fortunately, we arrived back before the skies opened. Offshore stuff Below is an extract from BankTeller, holidaying in Nevada, USA.
“Hi to all, I cycled from 6,300’ at Lake Tahoo to Mt Rose 8,900’ today. It was like climbing up a bloody steep hill, only this was a big mountain where the air is thin. At one point twds the top I was much higher up than the summit of Mt Kosciusko.” Kosciusko is 7,314ft, so PJ climbed 2,600ft climb. Without any info on the time it took him, we can’t calc ave. speed, but me suspects that it wouldn’t have been anything flash. Sunday, 9 Sept, Hills & Surfside café - 85km Rollout out of St Ives at 8am joining Doug Stewart’s contingent from Eastwood when it passes thru, and cycle E for 6.2km. Then R into Forest Way, passing thru Oxford Falls to 1st Nosh Stop at Narrabeen. Then cycle N linking onto Muggs’ return route from Warriewood, with 2nd Nosh Stop at Akuna Bay.
