Presently Emirates and a few other Middle East and Asian airlines provide a 30kg 'Check-in' luggage limit which includes taking a bicycle at no excess baggage penalty.
Most airlines now cap luggage to one bag up to 23km and charge up to AUD$150 per leg to transport a bicycle. With two 'legs' to France and two more 'legs' back to Sydney, that can be $600 to transport a bicycle.
Hence, renting at one of the below four bicycle rental shops in Bourg d'Oisan a -
* carbon fibre/Ultegra bike at 30Euro (AUD$39) per day (for a 5 day booking) and hopefully 25Euro (AUD$33) for a 16 day booking [AUD$528 for 16 days]; or
* aluminium frame/Shimano 105 bike at 25 Euro per day (for a 5 day booking) and hopefully 20Euro (AUD$29) for a 16 day booking [AUD$470 for 16 days],
seems preferable to paying hefty excess luggage fees and the hassle of bringing a bicycle.
Surprisingly, the rental bikes are either Scott, Trek, Specialised or Giant, with no local French brands.
