Homicide is the killing of one person by another.  A lot of homicides are due to manslaughter, particularly car accidents where a driver's negligence results in the death of another person.

If a person is charged with murder or manslaughter, but dies before a court hearing and judgement, that person who was killed is not included in the number of homicide statistics, because no one has been convicted of murder or manslaughter.

In the 29 years from June 1990 to June 2018 there were 8,126 reported incidents of homicide in Australia at an average rate of 280 homicides annually

There were 142 first degree murders in the 12 months to 30 June 2018, excluding persons charged with murder that suicide before a court hearing

There were 238 reported murder victims in Australia during 2014, compared to 249 in 2013.^[10]
