Capital Punishment in two Commonwealth of Nations countries in South-East Asia with low crime rates

The Cornell Center on the Death Penalty Worldwide reports that -

1.       Malaysia with a slightly larger population than Australia has a mandatory sentence of Capital Punishment by hanging for males over 17 years at the time of the offence that are not deemed Mentally Ill for:

Murder Terrorism-Related Offenses Not Resulting in Death Robbery Not Resulting in Death,  Burglary Not Resulting in Death,  Drug Trafficking Not Resulting in Death,  Treason. Other Offenses Not Resulting in Death.

Amnesty International reported that at least 800 people were under sentence of death in Malaysia at the end of 2017, and at least 38 death sentences were issued during the year.  In April 2016 the government stated that 1,042 people were on death row.  Of these, 649 people had legal appeals pending and 393 were seeking a pardon, which may explain the smaller number of those on death row in 2017.  In 2016, 36 death sentences were recorded. 39 new death sentences were issued in 2015.   At least 38 death sentences were issued in 2014.
