Passport & Visas Foreign Currency

Passports and visas are an essential part of

international travel. When planning your flight,

take the time to ensure your passport is valid

and to obtain a visa (if required) before you

disembark on your journey.

Passports

When travelling internationally, you are required

to have a valid passport to show upon

departure and arrival of your journey. In order

to be granted entry into a country, most will

require that your passport be valid for greater

than six months. If your passport is valid for less

than this period, or is out of date, you will need

to apply to renew your passport at an Australia

Post outlet before you travel. If you lose your

passport overseas, contact your embassy

immediately so they can arrange a replacement

for you, otherwise you won’t be able to leave a

foreign country.

Visas

Depending on diplomatic relations, some

countries will require you to obtain a visa in

order to stay in the country. Even if you are just

stopping over for a few hours, some countries

will require you to have a visa if you wish to

leave the airport. Some countries enable

tourists to obtain a visa at the point of entry

but still require a fee. In this case, you should

ensure that you have the appropriate currency

to pay the entry visa fee.

It is your responsibility when travelling or

transiting on your journey that you have valid

passports, visas and re-entry permits which

meet the requirement of immigration and other

government authorities. It you need information

regarding visa and other travel documentation

for your trip please let us know.

From pounds to euros to yen, it pays to know

your currencies when travelling. Whether you’re

carrying cash, credit cards or both, we can tell

you what you need to know about spending

money when overseas.

Part of the travelling experience is spending

money in different currencies. The Australian

dollar will go further in some countries than

others so it’s important to be aware of the

exchange rate and what things normally cost in

your destination.

In the lead up to your trip, decide how much

cash you plan on taking with you and keep an

eye on the exchange rates in order to get the

best rate. Foreign currency can be exchanged at

most banks and various outlets. While you can

usually exchange money when you reach your

destination, it’s generally advisable to have some

local currency with you prior to arriving at your

destination, particularly if you arrive late at

night.

If you’d prefer not to carry alot of cash, a travel

money card offers a safer option. These cards

allow you to load and withdraw foreign

currency and can also be used as eftpos.

Foreign currency and travel money cards can be

purchased from our store.

Alternatively, most modern ATM cards and

credit cards such as Visa and MasterCard can be

used to withdraw cash from thousands of

automated machines around the world. Before

leaving though, always tell your bank that you

will be travelling so that their fraud department

doesn’t lodge a case unnecessarily and block

the use of your card.

Airport arrival and departure tax is a common

aspect of today’s travel. Most arrival taxes are

included with your airline ticket. However some

departure taxes are not. So it’s best to be

aware if you need local currency before leaving

the unrestricted airport area.

Healthy Travel

Diseases that have been eradicated in Australia

may be present at your holiday destination. It’s

imperative that prior to departure, you talk with

your GP regarding possible diseases in the

region you’re travelling to and obtain the

necessary vaccinations.

Apart from the health risks, some vaccinations

are so important that countries prohibit travel

unless you prove your immunisation; so always

carry certificates from your doctor.

It’s important to remember that many countries

don’t provide free health care for tourists. So

without appropriate travel insurance, a visit to a

foreign hospital can be costly.

The World Health Organisation provides health

information for travellers. Also it’s a good idea

to check out www.smartraveller.gov.au.

If you need to take medication overseas, you

should check the medication is legal in the

destination country. On occasions, you may

need a letter from your doctor describing your

medical condition and a detailed list of the

medication required. In general the medication

should be carried in its original packaging and

clearly marked. For more medical information,

visit Medicare Australia.

LIMA

When people discuss great South American

cities, Lima is often overlooked. But Peru's

capital can hold its own against its neighbors. It

has an oceanfront setting, colonial-era splendor,

sophisticated dining, and nonstop nightlife.

It's true that the city—clogged with traffic and

choked with fumes—doesn't make a good first

impression, especially since the airport is in a

poor, industrial neighborhood. But wander

around the regal edifices surrounding the Plaza

de Armas, among the gnarled olive trees of San

Isidro's Parque El Olivar, or along the winding

lanes in the coastal community of Barranco, and

you'll find yourself charmed.

In 1535 Francisco Pizarro found the perfect

place for the capital of Spain's colonial empire.

On a natural port, the so-called Ciudad de los

Reyes (City of Kings) allowed Spain to ship

home all the gold the conquistador plundered

from the Inca. Lima served as the capital of

Spain's South American empire for 300 years,

and it's safe to say that no other colonial city

enjoyed such power and prestige during this

period.

When Peru declared its independence from

Spain in 1821, the declaration was read in the

square that Pizarro had so carefully designed.

Many of the colonial-era buildings around the

Plaza de Armas are standing today. Walk a few

blocks in any direction for churches and elegant

houses that reveal just how wealthy this city

once was. But the poor state of most buildings

attests to the fact that the country's wealthy

families have moved to neighborhoods to the

south over the past century.

The walls that surrounded the city were

demolished in 1870, making way for

unprecedented growth. A former hacienda

became the graceful residential neighborhood

of San Isidro. In the early 1920s, the

construction of tree-lined Avenida Arequipa,

heralded the development of neighborhoods

like bustling Miraflores and bohemian Barranco.

Almost a third of the country's population of

29 million lives in the metropolitan area, many

of them in relatively poor newer

neighborhoods on the outskirts of the city. Most

residents of those neighborhoods moved there

from mountain villages during the political

violence and poverty that marked the 1980s

and '90s, when crime increased dramatically.

During the past decade, the country has

enjoyed peace, steady economic growth, and

decreasing crime, which have been

accompanied by many improvements and

refurbishment in the city. Residents who used to

steer clear of the historic centre now stroll

along its streets. And many travelers who once

would have avoided the city altogether now

plan to spend a day here and end up staying

two or three.

Entertainment

Lima may not be the city that doesn't sleep, but

it certainly can't be getting enough rest.

Limeños love to go out, as you'll notice on any

Friday or Saturday night. Early in the evening

they're clustered around movie theaters and

concert halls, while late at night they are piling

into taxis headed to the bars and clubs of

Miraflores and Barranco. Ask at your hotel for a

free copy of an English-language monthly full of

information on bars and clubs as well as

galleries and performances.

Restaurants

Seafood, especially cebiche, is a Peruvian

speciality, and the variety of the ingredients and

recipes is impressive. Cebiche is traditionally

only eaten at lunch, so most cebicherías

(seafood restaurants) close in the late

afternoon.

Shopping

Hundreds of stores around Lima offer

traditional crafts of the highest quality. The same

goes for silver and gold jewelry. Wander down

Avenida La Paz in Miraflores and you'll be

astounded at the number of shops selling oneof-

a-kind pieces of jewelry; the street also yields

clothing and antiques at reasonable prices.

Miraflores is also full of crafts shops, many of

them along Avenida Petit Thouars. For upscale

merchandise, many people now turn to the

boutiques of San Isidro. For original works of

art, the bohemian neighborhood of Barranco

has some excellent small galleries.

BUENOS AIRES

"Capital of Argentina and often called 'the Paris

of South America,' Buenos Aires is a sprawling

urban metropolis. Scratch beneath the veneer

and you'll soon find Buenos Aires tourism has

plenty to offer. Birthplace of the tango and

home to a fascinating mix of South American

and European culture, the city beguiles

international visitors with its historic

architecture, lively atmosphere and vibrant

cultural scene. So brush up on your Spanish,

take those tango lessons and book your flights

to Buenos Aires because you'll soon be won

over by this enchanting metropolis on the banks

of the River Plate."

Entertainment

Porteños to party. Many don't think twice

about dancing until 6 am and heading to work

at 8 am. And alcohol doesn't play a vital role in

whether people enjoy themselves or not;

porteños could have fun at an insurance

convention, provided the conversation and

music were good and everyone looked

marvellous. Indeed, for many, it's better to good

than to good.

Nightlife these days is starting earlier. Lately, in

an effort to drum up business during the postwork/

pre-dinner window, many downtown bars

are promoting "after-office" drink specials; it's a

happy hour that often lasts until 9 or 10 pm.

This recent phenomenon aside, timing in

Buenos Aires nightlife is an exercise in patience.

Get there too early and the bar will be empty,

and you'll be tired when the atmosphere finally

builds. When families with kids in strollers don't

turn up for dinner until nearly midnight, you

know it will take a bit of work to be fashionably

late.

Hours are very fluid here, but there are some

general guidelines: theatre performances start

around 9 or 9:30 pm, and the last movie begins

after midnight. Bars get busy in the small hours,

and clubs, which attract crowds in the 18-35

age range, don't begin to fill up until 3 or 4 am.

If in doubt, turn up later than you think is

reasonable. That said, the subte closes around

11 pm, so going out means taking a taxi home

or staying out until 5 am when trains resume

running.

Much of Buenos Aires' nightlife is focused on

the past rather than the future. The city's true

party animals are—and always have been—the

old tangueros who have decades of experience

with staying out all night. Given that, it may take

a while for you to appreciate local customs,

fashion imperatives, and the overwhelming

importance of first impressions. That said, you

also see the excesses of youth as well as plenty

of modern, worldly nightspots.

Restaurants

"Vegetarians beware, Buenos Aires is paradise

for meat eaters! Beef reigns supreme on the

tables of Buenos Aires restaurants, courtesy of

the fertile Pampas grazing lands to the south of

the city. You'll find 'parillas' – or barbeque grill

restaurants – in every neighbourhood and

many critics rate Buenos Aires' succulent steaks

the best in the world. One of the finest

exponents is El Obrero in gritty La Boca – book

ahead if you're planning a weekend trip. For

nightlife head to the upscale Puerto Madero

not far from the Casa Rosada, while bohemian

San Telmo and the entire Palermo

neighbourhood are other great places to enjoy

a drink."

Shopping

Buenos Aires locals are renowned for their

fashion sense and there are plenty of

opportunities to splash the cash in the

Argentine capital. Shopping in Buenos Aires

usually involves a trip to Palermo, where the

most fashionable boutiques are located in the

trendy Soho part of the neighbourhood.

Downtown Microcentro welcomes shoppers to

its popular pedestrian-only thoroughfares

Florida Street and Lavalle Street, both of which

are lined with souvenir shops of varying quality.

Leather goods are popular gifts to take home

to friends and family, so don't forget to bring

measurements if you want to snap up a genuine

leather jacket.

Attractions

"The Plaza de Mayo is the city's main square,

named for the May revolution of 1810 which

led to Argentina's independence from Spain.

Surrounding the square are a series of historic

buildings, including the Pirámide de Mayo – a

monument to the historic revolution – and La

Casa Rosada, official residence of the President

of Argentina. Affluent Recoleta houses some of

the city's most significant sites, with the

15 Quote number Q6661607

extensive Recoleta Cemetery the final resting

place for many of Argentina's most important

figures. One of the most popular things to do in

Buenos Aires is take a trip to the colourful

neighbourhood of La Boca, which is as famous

for its astonishing 'La Bombonera' stadium as it

for the colourful houses which line its streets."

RIO DE JANEIRO

Carnival capital Rio de Janeiro is Brazil's second

largest city and a magnet for tourists who flock

to its golden beaches and spectacular

mountain-fringed setting. Rio de Janeiro tourism

is all about atmosphere, from the party vibe of

Carnival to showboating on Copacabana beach

and the revelry of a packed Maracana.

Renowned for its nightlife and laidback carioca

lifestyle, Rio still has its fair share of attractions.

The imposing Christ the Redeemer statue atop

Corcovado mountain is one of the most visited

tourist sites in the world, while Ipanema retains

its charm as one of Brazil's most vibrant

beaches.

Entertainment

Rio is light years beyond the seedy reputation

that it once had. Never before has the city

housed such a rich variety of cultural centers

and cutting-edge nightlife, and even though the

classic rhythms of samba may still dominate the

clubs, bars, and street corners, it's now possible

to find something to suit every kind of taste

almost every night of the week. Venues for

theatre, opera, ballet, and classical music are

plentiful, and smaller, more intimate (and often

more intriguing) events happen in most

neighborhoods.

More discerning arts enthusiasts should pick up

the Portuguese-language or bilingual published

by Riotur, the city's tourist board. The

Portuguese-language newspapers and publish

schedules of events in the entertainment

supplements of their Friday editions, which are

also to be found online at www.jb.com.br and

www.oglobo.com.br. Finally, is the city's best

entertainment guide, published every Saturday

and available in all newsstands.

Restaurants

Need refuelling after a long day at the beach?

Rio de Janeiro restaurants provide the perfect

pick-me-up in the form of some of Brazil's

tastiest dishes. Sit down to some 'feijoada' – the

famous black bean stew filled with a delicious

selection of meats. All-you-can-eat restaurants

known as 'rodízio' are popular, but for a more

upscale experience head to glitzy Leblon for a

meal at the popular Filé de Ouro. Nearby

Ipanema is home to popular sushi restaurant

Benkei and with a sizeable Japanese popular, Rio

is one of the best places in the world to sample

authentic Japanese cuisine. No trip to the city

would be complete without sipping on a

'caipirinha' – the national cocktail of Brazil

enjoyed by just about everyone in Rio.

Shopping

From beachwear to high-end fashion and

impressive works of art, there are plenty of

opportunities to stock the suitcase. Rio de

Janeiro shopping is often best conducted on the

beachfront stalls around Copacabana and

Ipanema. Here you can pick up a colourful

Brazilian bikini, some fashionable footwear or

perhaps a piece of street-made jewellery – just

don't forget to bring your haggling skills.

Cariocas are serious shoppers, so it's not

surprising that several popular shopping centres

are situated in the upscale Zona Sul cluster of

neighbourhoods, including Shopping Rio Sul and

Shopping Leblon.

Attractions

Rio de Janeiro will host the 2014 World Cup

final and the 2016 Summer Olympics and it's

not hard to see what makes this booming

metropolis such a popular tourist destination.

Many visitors make Corcovado their first stop

and you can catch a funicular train to the

summit to explore the stunning Christ the

Redeemer statue looming over the city.

Neighbouring Sugarloaf Mountain affords

panoramic views over Guanabara Bay from the

the cable cars which glide between its peaks.

Rio de Janiero attractions are not just limited to

its luscious natural surrounds. Rio is perhaps

best known for its annual Carnaval – a

spellbinding fortnight of revelry culminating in

spectacular samba parades throughout the city.

SANTIAGO

"With the Andes to the east and Pacific to the

west, you can hike and swim in the same day

when Santiago is your base. The Chilean capital

is not just the political centre of the country but

a whirl of museums, theatres, and a flourishing

arts scene. It's loud but the charming old district

of Barrio Brasil has huddles of bohemians and

top notch cuisine is being dished up in Bella

Vista and Providencia. Originally occupied by

the Spanish from the mid 1500s, Santiago

gained independence in 1817 following The

Battle of Chacabuco. Today, as in most Latin

American cities, soccer is embraced more as a

religion than a sport."

Entertainment

Although it can't rival Buenos Aires or Rio de

Janeiro, Santiago buzzes with increasingly

sophisticated bars and clubs. Santiaguinos often

meet for drinks during the week, usually after

work when most bars have happy hour. Then

they call it a night, as most people don't really

cut loose until Friday and Saturday. Weekends

commence with dinner beginning at 9 or 10

and then a drink at a pub. (This doesn't refer to

an English beer hall; a pub here is a bar with

loud music and a lot of seating.) No one thinks

of heading to the dance clubs until 1 am, and

they stay until 4 or 5 am.

Nightlife

Bars and clubs are scattered all over Santiago,

but a handful of streets have such a

concentration of establishments that they

resemble block parties on Friday and Saturday

nights. Pub crawls along Avenida Pío Nono and

neighboring streets in Bellavista yield venues

aimed at a young crowd (the drinking age is

18). Just across the river, the short José

Victorino Lastarria Street also has a lot of lively

little bars. To the east in Providencia, the area

around the Manuel Montt metro station and

the Tobalaba station attract a slightly older and

better-heeled crowd.

What you should wear depends on your

destination. Bellavista has a mix of styles ranging

from blue jeans to basic black and, in general,

the dress gets smarter the farther east you

move, but remains casual.

Note that establishments referred to as

"nightclubs" are almost always female strip

shows. The signs in the windows usually make it

quite clear what goes on inside.

Gay and Lesbian Nightlife

Once mostly underground, Santiago's gay scene

is bursting at the seams. Although some bars

are so discreet they don't have a sign, others

are known by just about everyone. Clubs like

Bunker, for example, are so popular that they

attract a fair number of non-gays. There's a

cluster of gay restaurants and bars on the

streets parallel to Avenida Pío Nono in

Bellavista.

Restaurants

"Bella Vista is the home of Santiago's vibrant

nightlife. Avoid the area's main-street tourist

traps and follow locals towards Bellavista's

hidden gems. Remember, you haven't really

been to Santiago until you've tried the earthshaking

concoction called 'terremoto' (this

literally translates as 'earthquake'). What is it?

Pineapple ice cream and fermented white wine.

Bottoms up! Carnivores will love the range of

steak houses in this city and seafood lovers are

also well catered for. A highly-acclaimed

Santiago restaurant is Astrid y Gaston – with its

seasonally-changing menu of Peruvian haute

cuisine, it's an eternal favourite."

Shopping

If you're looking for the high end fashion and

luxury stores, make your way to Alonso de

Cordova Street and Nueva Costanera. Grab a

craft bargain in Centro Artensanal Santa Lucia

or find a handicrafts centre in Bella Vista. If you

have a local with you, there are shops with

cheap food, clothes and all sorts at Patronato.

Otherwise, Santiago shopping is mainly based

around a lot of malls. Chile's most-famous

department stores are Falabella, Paris and

Ripley.

Attractions

"If you're visiting the Chilean capital in January

and are a jazz fan, swing by the Providencia

International Jazz Festival. There's an

international line up and the local scene gets

even hotter. One of Santiago's top attractions is

the Chilean Museum of Pre-Colombian Art

(note it reopens late 2013) but there's no

shortage of galleries and museums to keep you

occupied otherwise. Enjoy a great view of the

city on a clear day from San Cristobal Hill (at its

base there are botanical gardens, a zoo and

20 Quote number Q6661607

swimming pools to cool off in while you're

there). A fun way to get to know Santiago a

little better is to take a Spicy Chile free walking

tour."

business days prior to the actual due date. You must notify your

consultant of your payment once it has been made.

PAYMENTS BY CHEQUE

(Not applicable to online bookings)

Please note that cheque payments (excluding bank cheques) require

about 5 business days to process. If you are paying by this method you

will need to make the payment at least 5 business days prior to the

actual due date. You agree not to stop payment of the cheque even

when you cancel a booking. You agree that we may apply the proceeds

of the cheque to satisfy any liability you have to us, including any liability in

respect of cancellation fees, before refunding the balance to you.

TAXES

Airline taxes are subject to change and are confirmed at the time your

airline ticket is issued. There may also be a local tax charged at some

airports.

SERVICE GUARANTEES

Our booking and advisory services come with a guarantee that:

• they will be provided with due care and skill;

• they will be reasonably fit for the specified purpose;

• they can reasonably be expected to achieve the desired result; and

• they will be provided within a reasonable time.

If we fail to meet any of these guarantees, you have rights under the

Australian Consumer Law.

AGENCY

We act as an agent for, and sell various travel related products as agent

on behalf of, numerous transport, accommodation and other service

providers, such as airlines, coach, rail and cruise line operators, as well as

all of our wholesalers. Any services we provide to you are collateral to

that agency relationship. Our obligation to you is to (and you expressly

authorise us to) make travel bookings on your behalf and to arrange

relevant contracts between you and travel service providers. We

exercise care in the selection of reputable service providers, but we are

not ourselves a provider of travel services and have no control over, or

liability for, the services provided by third parties. All bookings are made

on your behalf subject to the terms and conditions, including conditions

of carriage and limitations of liability, imposed by these service providers.

We can provide you with copies of the relevant service provider terms

and conditions on request. Your legal rights in connection with the

provision of travel services are against the specific provider and, except to

the extent a problem is caused by fault on our part, are not against us.

Specifically, if for any reason (excluding fault on our part) any travel

service provider is unable to provide the services for which you have

contracted, your rights are against that provider and not against us.

LIABILITY

To the extent permitted by law, neither Flight Centre Travel Group

Limited nor any of its related bodies corporate, directors, employees or

agents accept any liability in contract, tort or otherwise for any injury,

damage, loss (including consequential loss), delay, additional expense or

inconvenience caused directly or indirectly by the acts, omissions or

default, whether negligent or otherwise, of third party providers over

whom we have no direct control, force majeure or any other event

which is beyond our control or which is not preventable by reasonable

diligence on our part. Our liability will also be limited to the extent that

any relevant international conventions, for example the Montreal

Convention in respect of travel by air, the Athens Convention in respect

of travel by sea, the Berne Convention in respect of travel by rail and the

Paris Convention in respect of the provision of accommodation, limit the

amount of compensation which can be claimed for death, injury, or delay

to passengers and loss, damage and delay to luggage. Under

circumstances where our liability cannot be excluded and where liability

may be lawfully limited, such liability is limited to the remedies required of

us under applicable law (including the Australian Consumer Law). This

liability clause is subject to your rights under the Australian Consumer

Law and nothing in these terms and conditions is intended to limit any

rights you may have under the Competition and Consumer Act 2010

(Cth).

BOOKING TERMS AND CONDITIONS

FREQUENT FLYER

When booking with one of our consultants, please let them know your

frequent flyer membership details (or other applicable loyalty program

details) for inclusion in your booking. If you are booking online, please

insert these details in the space provided for inclusion in your booking.

Please check your frequent flyer program (or other applicable loyalty

program) for the specific terms of your membership. We cannot

guarantee that the supplier will credit you with points for your booking.

TRAVEL DOCUMENTS

Travel documents include (without limitation) airline tickets, hotel

vouchers, tour vouchers or any other document (whether in electronic

form or otherwise) used to confirm an arrangement with a service

provider. Travel documents may be subject to certain conditions and/or

restrictions including (without limitation) being non-refundable, non-datechangeable

and subject to cancellation and/or amendment fees. Travel

documents cannot be transferred to another person to use. All airline

tickets must be issued in the name of the passport/photo identity holder.

An incorrect name on a booking may result in an inability to use that

booking and the booking being cancelled. Please review your travel

documentation carefully and advise us immediately of any errors in

names, dates or timings. If you have booked with a consultant, it is your

responsibility to collect all travel documents from us prior to travel. As a

general rule your travel documents will be available for collection 2

weeks prior to departure, however this will depend on your individual

arrangements. Please contact your consultant to confirm when your

travel documents are ready for collection. If you have booked online, you

should print out and retain your travel documents as provided to you by

the website (or in a follow up email we send you).

SCHEDULE CHANGES

We recommend that you contact the airline to confirm your scheduled

departure time 24 hours prior to your flight.

PRIVACY POLICY

We are committed to protecting your personal information and agree to

handle your personal information in accordance with our Privacy Policy,

which is available online at http://www.flightcentre.com.au/privacy or in

store. By providing personal information to us, you agree that our

Privacy Policy will apply to how we handle your personal information and

you consent to us collecting, using and disclosing your personal

information as detailed in our Privacy Policy. In particular, you agree that

in certain circumstances (such as where you request us to book

international travel for you), we are permitted to disclose your personal

information to overseas recipients. Such recipients may include the

overseas travel service providers (e.g. airlines, accommodation or tour

providers) with whom you make a booking. These travel service

providers will in most cases receive your personal information in the

country in which they will provide the services to you or in which their

business is based. We may also disclose your personal information to our

overseas related entities and to service providers who perform services

for us within and outside of Australia. Generally, we will only disclose

your personal information to these persons in connection with facilitation

of your travel booking and/or to enable the performance of

administrative and technical services by them on our behalf. Where we

disclose your personal information to any person (including any overseas

recipients), you agree that we will not be required to ensure that

person’s compliance with Australian privacy laws or otherwise be

accountable for how they handle your personal information. When used

above, “disclose” includes to transfer, share, send, or otherwise make

available or accessible to another person or entity.

MONIES NOT HELD ON TRUST

All monies paid by you to us will be the property of Flight Centre Travel

Group Limited and will be a debt due and payable to the travel service

provider once the services to which the money relates have been

provided (except for monies paid for flights with an IATA airline, which

might be held on trust for that IATA airline). You agree and acknowledge

that such monies will not be held by us on trust for and on behalf of you

and we may hold such monies in any account as we see fit, including with

our own and/or other customer monies.

GOVERNING LAW

If any dispute arises between you and us, the laws of Australia will apply.

You irrevocably and unconditionally submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of

the courts of Australia, and waive any right that you may have to object

to an action being brought in those courts.

These terms were last updated on 3 March 2014.
