Wrap Up on “Tour de Wyong via Spencer”

By 8:15am, Sara, Sylvia, Brenda & Vicki, the fairer sex contingent, and Siggy, Bruce, Steve, Phil and Ian, fearless male warriors, were “on their bikes” headed for Peats Ridge.  Ian scored his customary “flat” in the perhaps dangerous spot of a steep decent into Spencer.

We discovered “Thelma & Louise” in Kathy and Jan, the proprietors of the Riverbend Cafe” at Spencer on the river, who prepared no shortage of sandwiches and fresh plunger coffee.  The “cow” looked a bit suss, until one of our hostesses assured us that “we always warm the milk”.  Music by Vivaldi circa gramophone. PJ got the phone # of the Riverbend Cafe” [043-771280] as Kathy/Jan promised to prepare “skunk’s head soup and grits” for our next visit to “Deliverance”.

Alas, 1:15pm and Siggy had us back in the saddle.  The climb out of Spencer couldn’t have been that bad, ‘cause we all made it.  At the top, Sylvia demonstrated a skill with a knife on a bucket of oranges that would make you think twice about really upsetting her if their was a switch-blade between you and your intended egress.

Someone must have spiked Phil J’s sambo’s with ginger, ‘cause he went like “s_ _t out of Shanghai to Yarramalong Manor, where the team “pigged out” on scones, hidden by lashings of jam & cream.  It was on again over the final 22 clicks to Wyong train station, although some of the chaps stole a jump on Brenda and Sylvia by breaking at the start.

Sig won the yellow jersey, although Phil tried to “pip him on the post” [cheat] by cutting the right corner up the wrong side of the road to Wyong station.  Sylvia and Brenda ripped into the bus driver at Wyong - fortunately it worked - otherwise we would have had 2 buses carrying 7 riders 30k to Gosford - think of the taxpayer’s money the brazen lasses saved! - Siggy’s forecast finishing time of 4:30 proved 10 minutes shy, however, he was near to the mark with the 132km.

Run Down on RTA Cycle Sydney and Back!!!

Enclosed is a copy of the entry form for this Sunday’s 100 kms from “The Home Of The Bear”, North Sydney Oval to Kempt Field, Hurstville and return to Bear Park.  Our ride takes us along the foreshore of where a chap who has since left us, Captain Cook, first set foot on dear old Oz - Botany Bay.  Re page 2 of the E/F, you can enter at a bunch of popular cycle shops, or reply facsimile to 9283.5246 noting your credit card #  -  $20 for Bike NSW members.  Bike NSW informs that kits will be available for collection from 5am.

Sig has set a 6:40am arrival for a 6:55am start - hopefully to beat the 7am rush.  Suggest you attempt to park ANAP to Cnr Miller & Carlow Sts.  100 clicks of relatively flat riding should wipe out 4 hours of your Sunday morning, which leaves us with half an hour for breakfast on the beach at Sans Souci at 8:50am [just prior to the Hurstville turn around] and an hour for brunch at “Little Bay” from around 10:50am [one third the way into the return leg around].  We should re-group at North Sydney Oval from 1pm.  Sara, Sam [and hopefully also expat Grainne] will be starting the ride at 9:15am - finishing at midday and returning via the Harbour Bridge around 1pm.  Wolfgang might can his house refurbishing for a while and join them!

North Sydney is Stephen Belfer’sstamping ground”. Stephen has recommended the “Miller’s Treat” cafe [just ouside the Stanton library - 400 metres back down Millar St towards the city] for a post ride mug of you know what.  It could be a good spot to catch up with an Irish lass who is rumoured to have been recently terrorising peaceful folk on the other side of the globe.  Alternatively. it could also be a chance to do something else on a Sunday arvo, and defer finding out how Grainne salvaged the Irish peace process over a restaurant night some time shortly.
