Whippet's rap-up of Sunday, 31 July, "Brunch at Bayview" - 86km

The temperature at the St Ives start ‘twas five above average.  It climbed to 23 by mid-morning which makes you wonder why we didn’t start an hour earlier.  There was a baker’s dozen assembled on this bright sunny morning:

Andrew, Grant aka BeanCounter, Pete ’n Lynda, Peter Tyson aka Pacific, Tony McD aka Publican, Tony aka BigGears, Tony J aka Samurai, Trevor aka Tornado, Arno aka Heineken, John aka Auckland, Matt aka Printer, Mark aka LongHaul ‘n Whippet.

Included in our bunch was Andrew on his new Fondrest bike who hadn’t ridden with Muggs since StarBucks' (who moved to Melb.) front wheel collapsed on the last turn into West Head well over two years' agoAndrew would spin along with the best of our front runners on this spectacular Spring day in mid-Winter.

After a helter skelter sprint out to Duffys Forrest 'n back we re-grouped at Terrey Hills opposite the Thai Restaurant Our descent of McCarrs Creek road for the sweeping tight-hander past the toll booth (on LHS) evidenced the Peloton launch a break-a-way on the climb up to the Akuna Bay “T” juncture.  The surge was initially led by Freshman Andrew, BeanCounter, Heineken, Yamaha ‘n Linda (on their tandem) and Temperate Tony having taken up the cudgels to maintain this furious pace, with Auckland, Tornado, Printer, ‘n Whippet in the second bunch.

On such a balmy Winter’s morn the view at the headland was magnificent where the blue Pacific was at its shimmering best over the 270O panorama.  After a 10 mins stop to nibble on our pre-packed munchies, we retraced along West Head Rd over the familiar rough surface.  A new white centre line was noticeable which likely means there won’t be a splash of resurfacing tar in the forcible future.  Ah well cyclists can’t expect everything from the $10 entry fee for cars.

At the juncture of McCarrs Creek Rd and West Head Rd we farewelled BeanCounter, BigGears, Publican 'n Whippet who opted to climb up McCarrs Creek road back to St Ives.  The speed machine would run down McCarrs Creek Rd where a smooth hot-mix bitumen finish was appreciated.  Then thru Church Point for a Nosh Stop at the Bayview Marina, whereupon the leaner contingent retraced the smooth surface on the climb back up McCarrs Creek which was deemed a safer option from this late start of 8.40am, as the Warriewood Beach, Wakehurst parkway route was too busy on this hot sunny day.  The smaller group of NoPlay ‘n Lynda, Printer, Heineken returned to St Ives well satisfied with this Sojourn to the Seaside.  Andrew opted to take in the extra Akuna Bay loop; Auckland made his own way back. Tornado, Pacific Pete 'n LongHaul took separate routes back to their northern beaches digs.
