Detailed ride spec:
Park at St Ives council car park in Mona Vale Rd [opposite Paterson’s Patisserie and Stanley St] by 8:15am for 8:30am rollout cycling nth along Mona Vale Rd [slower cyclists start from 8:20am].

After 6.4km [opposite Forest Way - at Mona Vale Fruit Barn] we L at junction of Mona Vale Rd and Forest Way - Terrey Hills Fruit Barn on RHS) into Myoora Rd and take a fleeting 1st Sag Stop (2 min) to re-group.

Cycle about 3kms down/up, down/up Myoor Larool Rd.  About 70m before Terrey Hills neighbourhood shopping centre we L into Tepko Rd and a further 300m L into Booralie Rd, then pedal like "shit out of Shanghai" 6km flat/fast stretch past Terrey Hills Golf Course and rifle range to Duffys Forest where we U-turn at the dead-end of Cow Corner and return via same route and pull up about 30m short of Terrey Hills shopping centre for a 2nd Sag Stop (3 min).  We enter Ku’ring’gai Chase National Park (around 9:35am) via Dandenong Rd (just before shops) and Beltana Ave and descend McCarrs Creek Rd / West Head Rd.

At the V (dual entrances to the park) take anti-clock route [right fork] and descend hooking a L at McCarrs Creek bridge.  After cycling 2km uphill we pause around 9:55am for a 3rd Sag Stop (3 min) at the "T" juncture (Akuna Bay Marina is 4km on LHS and West Hd Rd extends 12km straight ahead to the headland).

We then commence 33 minute pedal to West Head arriving at 10:30am.  Pack lots of nibbles, ‘cause we take our 1st Nosh Stop (20 min) at the headland for a snack and a gawk at the majestic, shimmering peninsula - Pittwater/Lion Island stuff.  Around 10:45am we return, and descend to McCarrs Creek bridge at 11:20am [55km].

We then make a sharp L into McCarrs Creek Rd continuing on past Church Point [60km] at 11:35am, thence past Bayview Marina [62km].  A few km later we R into Cabbage Tree Rd (Bayview Golf Course will be on both L and R) which leads into Samuel St.  About 10 min later we halt at end of Samuel St adjacent to the cemetery for the 4th Sag Stop (3 min) before crossing Mona Vale Rd at the roundabout around 11:55am.

Road changes to Ponderosa Pde for about 500m and then McPherson St. for about 1.5km, where we then take R into Warriewood Rd shortly thereafter crossing Pittwater Rd at traffic lights and immediately climbing up Hunter St [dog-leg left, then right] which shortly leads to views of the Blue Pacific overlooking majestic Warriewood Beach [around 12:15 pm - 71 km] for 2nd Nosh Stop (35 min).  A neighbourhood, strip-front shopping centre is immediately on our right in Narrabeen Park Pde.  Nautilus Café is about 4 shops along.  Alternatively, Sunrise Milk Bar on the Cnr. makes good burgers.

If the weather is fine, we’ll take in the ambience and indulge in friendly repartee over lunch for up to 35 min, carbo/protein loading for the 29km return leg at 1pm, ‘via Bayview, Church Point and McCarrs Creek where at 1:42pm we re-group at 5th Sag Stop (5 min) at “V” juncture (top of McCarrs Creek climb) after 89km at 1:50pm.  ETR St Ives is 2:25pm – 100km.

Akuna Bay option
After 86.8km at 1:40pm, anyone interested may turn R back into the park and cycle anti-clockwise to Akuna Bay Café for a 3rd Nosh Stop
(20 min) after 92.3km at 2:05pm.  At 2:25pm they would cycle 2.2km to Illawong Bay, up the awkward Akuna Bay climb past Cottage Point turn off [96.3km - 2:45pm] and halting for the 5th Sag Stop at the "V" juncture of dual park entrances [100.6km - 3:10pm].  Those Suckers would return to St. Ives at 3:45pm - 112km “in toto” for a much req'd coffee at Paterson’s Patisserie.

Bank Teller’s rap-up of Sunday, 14 Rocktober
Tour de Royal National Park – 87km

Unheard of, ‘cause 10 mins before the advertised roll-out time, seven Muggs had mustered for an “away-game”  (Sutherland Leisure Centre) hankering to get underway – ToothFairy, Widget, Navigator, BigGears, Whippet, Pacific Pete and Dirty Cheat.

After descending to Audley Weir the arduous climb up to Artillery Hill was only 2.5km, but it kinder crept up on some of us, notably Widget whose bicycle seat had seen precious little of her bum in recent months.

Smack on 15km after cruising thru Flat Rock, we hooked a L into Bundeena Drive for our initial Sag Stop, then it was All-Ahead-Full for Bundeena Beach which we reached at 9:30am, after 34km - the quaint, pristine village still half asleep on what was a tranquil, partially o’cast, albeit breezy morn’.

Last April on a corker of an Autumn day, the local fish shop, Wharf View Café, had done Muggs proud when the Bundeena Café was chockers.  While Whippet was conflicted between the prime location of the Bundeena Café and his loyalty to the fish shop, Pacific Pete had settled into the former.  With the joint exhibiting the “we’re just opening” routine, we limited ourselves to a drug fix, with the prospect of grub at our 2nd Nosh Stop, Otford Apple Pie Shop which we hit at 11:45am [57km] after successfully negotiating headwinds along Bundeena Drive and Lady Wakehurst Drive.

Alas, half a click before the awaited Otford café, that spectacular vista of southern beaches leading to Wollongong, which befalls cyclists upon departing the woody forest, didn’t look quite as spectacular under a clouded sky.  But it still beat anything else we could contemplate on an o’castish Sunday morn’.

Burgers and steak sangers was the preferred tucker.  Otford is a popular Nosh Stop, probably for the panoramic views and déjà vu of previous Gong Rides, but alas the joint ain’t noted for its carte du jour.

Navigator pulled out a map of Canberra enquiring of Fitz’s route, but The Scribe wasn’t much help, muttering something about “I think it goes somewhere out that way”, proffering that all the Good Oil on Fitz’s was in an article in the current Oz cyclist mag.

Widget came a cropper with cramps on the incline to Waterfall, and incurred Arrogant Bastard’s wrath for holding everyone up mega hours.  “Why does Russell countenance you going off to expensive physios, who teach you valuable stretches which you promise faithfully to repeat, and immediately upon walking out of their rooms, you forget ‘em?”  It seems that Pacific literally had to drag Widget and her treadley off McKell Ave when she collapsed like a bag of Pelican Poo, wreathing in agony with cramps seizing both legs.

Don’t ask how, but Wonky Welsh Wobbler came good at the top of Waterfall - good enough to hammer-out the final 13.7km back to our motors at Sutherland Leisure Centre where we all said our cheerios, with lots of smiles 'n warm fuzzies, 'til next week.

When the rubber hit the road, Temperate and Whippet played tag all day in the role of Head Scouts.  However, BigGears may have had a tad more left in the can.  But there is no one quicker off the mark than apply monikered Whippet - must've been a greyhound in an earlier life.

NB:    The Garie Drive turn-off which leads 4.5km to Garie Beach is 6km south of Bundeena Drive.  There is a kiosk and a steep climb out, so we will likely include that additional adjunct increasing to 96km when this ride is repeated, either on the New Year long w'end or Easter, as the RNP is quiet on holiday w'ends.

Following Sunday, 5 November Turra' @ 7:15am [91km] or Hornsby @ 8am [57.5km] - Quatre Montagnes "Plus" (clockwise)
includes adjuncts down Sommerville Rd 3.5km and Crosslands Rd 3km.
