Day 14  -  Sault to Mont Ventoux summit  -  more Mont Ventoux info  -  Climb rating: 4 stars

Starting from Sault (el 694m) the Mont Ventoux climb is 25.7 km, ascending 1,152 vert. meters, ave 4.5 % - 11% max.

The ascent from Sault is the easiest of the three climbs. The elevation is much less because the start of the ascent from Sault is at a height of 694m. The distance is longer than the other two at 26km. The elevation of 723m over the first 20km from Sault (el. 694m) to Chalet Reynard (el.1417m) has an average gradient of a mere 3.6%. The final 6km from Chalet Reynard in much better condition than if you have just slogged up through the forest from Bédoin.

After a short descent out of Sault you start the climb up through the lavender fields then a few short sharp sections lead up into the forest from where it becomes a boring haul. The road then sweeps left at 1,263m where a gentle section trends south to the viewpoint and Belvedere at 1,327m. From here to Chalet Reynard the gradient is gentle and the last 2km are almost flat.

The final 6km from Chalet Reynard are exactly the same as the Bédoin route. Very exposed and weather dependent with a reputation of being very windy. On leaving Chalet Reynard there is a short steep section but rounding the first bend you notice a significant drop in gradient with an average of approximately 7% for the next 4.5km. The last part from the Simpson Memorial rears up again and the last 1,500m average 10%.

The first 20km is easy, despite a not-great road surface passing exquisite deciduous and coniferous woodland downhill you wind through the spectacular scenery, passing lavender fields to a relatively easy ascent. The view across the valley are splendid to Châlet Reynard, with the final 3 km a blast, being almost flat.

After that, the eerie limestone moonscape begins where you drop to your lowest gear, stopping to take a photo of the poignant Tommy Simpson memorial before the last 2 km, and in particular the last, brutal 1km at 11%.  Descend via Malaucène.  The D974 is wide and very smooth. From Malaucène, avoid any hills, breezing south through Caromb, Mazan, and back home via the flatlands east of Carpentras.
